SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,153, dated June 11, 190i.

To all whom it may concern:
` Be it known that I, OscAE REITZ, of N uremberg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners for Glowing Lights, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention.
The object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for an incandescent gas burner whereby a greatly increased power of illumination can be obtained from the consumption of a certain amount of gas.
In using incandescent gas burners constructed in the ordinary manner it is found that when the supply of gas to the burner is reduced the entire mantle of the burner is not brought to a state of incandescence, but the upper portion thereof will be dark and non-luminous. By my invention, however, the gas is more closely confined within the mantle and prevented from escaping as freely and directly from the upper end thereof as is possible in the ordinary construction, so that the gas is caused to penetrate the upper portion of the mantle as well as the lower portion thereof and the entire body caused to glow and furnish light.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated a burner constructed in accordance with my invention, the burner being partly in section.
Referring to the drawing, a designates a pin or rod by which the incandescent mantle b is supported about the usual burner-supply tube or pipe. Above the mantle b is arranged a disk or deiiector c. As shown, this disk is made concave on its under surface and is provided with a toothed or serrated edge to permit air to pass uniformly there- It is shown as carried by the mantleunder.

The disk or delector c is of such diameter as to extend entirely across the upper openend of the mantle a, and preferably is of as great a diameter as the lower end of the mantle.
The advantages incident to such a construction as that invented by me and described above will be readily understood and appreciated. By it the gas is caused to penetrate every portion of the mantle, and the entire body thereof is uniformly heated, thus obtaining the greatest possible illuminating effect from the gas and mantle. I have found that by my invention if the supply of gas to the burner be reduced one-half of its maximum all parts of the mantle will be caused to glow and furnish illumination, whereas under similar conditions with a burner of ordinary construction the upper portion of the mantle will remain non-luminous.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l.' The combination with an incandescent gas-burner, and the chimney thereof, of a deiiector arranged within the chimney above the mantle of the burner.
2. The combination with an incandescent gas-burner, of a peripherally-toothed deliector arranged within the chimney of the burner above and extending across the upper end of the mantle therein.
