OOO OO` o o o @www l# 1WHIILl v v w/rllfssss: I l o j oo veu-r I l1 L gwww VUM ,4 mld l UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE. y
FRANK A. MERRICK, OF JOHNSTOIVN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TOlTHE LORAIN STEEL COMPANY, OF PENNSYLVANIA.
ARMATURE VENTILATION.
SPECIFICATION forfnng' part Of Letters Patent NO. 675,518, dated Tune 4, 1901. Application tiled October 25, 1900. Serial No. 34,279. (No model.)
an armature-core isV composed' for the pur-V pose of providing Ventilating-spaces between such laminas.
With this object in view my invention consists in a short Aspacing-block or rivet-piece reduced at each end to formr studs .adapted to extend through apertures vin adjacent laininze and to be secured to such'laminzeby upsetting their ends.
My invention also consists in the combination, With two adjacent plates or laminas having apertures therein, of a plurality of short spacers separating the same and having end portions secured therein.
My invention further consists in the novell construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of an armature embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig; 1. Fig. 3, is a section onthe line 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing two of the laminae and the interposed separators; and Fig. 4 is a detail viewof one ofthe separators.
The letter A designates the plates or laminte, of which the armature-core is built up in the usual manner, being keyed or otherwise secured to a suitable support, (not shown,) with a central air-space around the armatureshaft.
Bdesignates airspaces which are provided at suitable intervals between adjacent laminze, two such spaces being shown in Fig. l. To provide these spaces,- adjacent laminasx are separated longitudinally from each other port at the proper intervals.
` and are held apart by means of short spacers Y.fore the laminas are assembled, so that the paix-sof laminas which are connected by theI spacers may be placed in position on the sup- I prefer to arrange these spacers in the manner shown by the punchingin Fig. 2^-vthat is to say, one series near the outer ends of the teeth, a sec ond series adjacent to the bottom of the coreslots, a third series, lesser in number, in near 7o the central support, and a fourth series between thewse'cond and third series and alter natin g with the latter. I do not, however, limit myself to this arrangement, as various other arrangements may be employed.
The use of spacers such as above de scribed provides a very simple and efficient l means for the purpose and insures the spaced laminte being held rigidly in their separated positions and Without bending or distortion So of their teeth.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The herein-described spacer for arma- 85 ture-cores, consisting of a short piece of metal having reduced and shouldered ends adapted to engage adjacent plates or laminze of the cores and form abutments therefor.
2. The herein-described spacer for arma; 9o
ture-cores, consisting of a short piece of nonmagnetic material having reduced and shoul dered ends adapted to engage adjacent plates or laminze of the cores and form' abutments therefor. 3. In an armature-core, the combination with two adjacent plates or laminas, of a plurality of short spacing-pieces separating the same, and secured thereto at their ends.
4:. In an armature-core, the combination reo two adjacent toothed plates or lainin, of a plurality of short spacing-pieces separating the same, and securedv theretoat both ends, I5 part of said pieces being arranged between the teeth of said plates or 1aminee.-
1n testimony whereof I have afxed iny signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK A. MERRICK.
l with two .adjacent plates `or lamnfof a plurality pf `short spaeing-pieces separating the same, and having reduced end portionsy engaging apertures therein.
5 5. In an armature, the combination with two adjacent plates or laminas, of a plurality of short spacing-pieces separating the same I and having studs or rivet portions .at each end, which extend through the said plates or ro laminas and are upset at' the opposite sides of ,Witnessesz .the same.
