IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLES FOR SEWING MACHINES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, H. A. M. HARRIS, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the Starte of Pennsylvania., have invented a certain new und useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Needles, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, .which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a. side view ot' one of my nished double-pointed needles.

t is the object of my invention to reduce the cost of sewing-machine needles without impniring their effectiveness; and to this end my invention consists in so forming the needle that one shank shall carry two points, hnving en eye in each point, so that when one point is worn or broken the reversal 0f the shank shall supply a. new needle.
In manufacturing my needles I cut the steel wire of which they are to be formed of the length desired for the doublepointed needle A, point these lengths of wire at both ends a and a', drill or punch an eye, b and b', near each point, and punch or eut grooves c und c on opposite sides of the eye for a length sucient to retain the thread upon the needle the distance required to enable the thread to drow properly through the eye of the needle und the material being sewn. Needles thus constructed muy be straight or curved, `to suit a large variety of sewing machines, and may be of any size, und having two points to each stock they will prove extremely economical and be used with marked convenience.
