Letters Patent No. 67,536, dated August 6, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLES FOR SEWING MACHINES.
@iin rlphulr ruimt tu in tigen Enters ixtnit mit making gait nf tige time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, H. A. M. HARRIS, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the Starte of Pennsylvania., have invented a certain new und useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Needles, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, .which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a. side view ot' one of my nished double-pointed needles.
Figure 2 is a representation ofthe needlein its stock; and
Figure 3 is n top view of the needle-stock und screw-bolts with the hole drilled through it to receive a-nd hold the needle.
t is the object of my invention to reduce the cost of sewing-machine needles without impniring their effectiveness; and to this end my invention consists in so forming the needle that one shank shall carry two points, hnving en eye in each point, so that when one point is worn or broken the reversal 0f the shank shall supply a. new needle.
In manufacturing my needles I cut the steel wire of which they are to be formed of the length desired for the doublepointed needle A, point these lengths of wire at both ends a and a', drill or punch an eye, b and b', near each point, and punch or eut grooves c und c on opposite sides of the eye for a length sucient to retain the thread upon the needle the distance required to enable the thread to drow properly through the eye of the needle und the material being sewn. I then harden and polish the needle in any of the methods most approved, when the needle muy be placed in its stock B properly, and is ready for use, one point being arranged for sewing while the other muy be preyentedfroin catching in the goods or injuring the operator by n. shield, df, which may be slipped over the upper point ofthe needle end held in platee by an elastic band, e, passing from the shield, to which it is attached by both ends, around the clump screw-bnltf, by which the needle is held in place in the stock B. A hole, g, drilled through the screw-bolt may be inode to receive the needle, a-nd a. screwnut, h, on the opposite side of the needle-arm or stock B will draw the bolt and hold the needle securely in plnce, und when the screw-holt i is relaxed the needle cnn be properly adjusted in every direction.
Needles thus constructed muy be straight or curved, `to suit a large variety of sewing machines, and may be of any size, und having two points to each stock they will prove extremely economical and be used with marked convenience.
What I clniin ns my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
'lhc new article ot' manufacture, constructed substontinlly in the manner described, and constituting a, double-eye pointed sewing-machine needle. l
I also claim the combination with the double-eye pointed needle of u shield or cup, substantially as andl for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof` I have-hereunto subscribed my nume.
H. A. M. HARRIS.
