SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,945, dated May 28, 1901.

To (tZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN C. SUMMERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Hope, in the county of Holmes and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Loaders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a top view showing the upper section extended. 2isa longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the extension folded. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal section of one of the lateral carriers. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of one of the lateral carriers. Fig. 6 is a top view showing one of the lateral tooth-bars and also showing a portion of one of the ways or tracks. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line so as, Fig. 8. Fig. 8 is a View showing the relative position of the carriers for the upper and lower hay-elevating cylinders and the difierent position of the teeth and their arms and rollers. Fig. 9 is a transverse section of one of the lateral toothbars, showing a portion of the canvas and a staple for connecting the bar.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in hayloaders; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the side members or bars of the frame, which are held in proper relative position by means of suitable cross tie bars or rods, said crossbars or tie-rods not being illustrated, inasmuch as they are common and are of no importance, as no particular construction is necessary. To the side members 1 or their equivalents is connected the tongue 2. The supporting and traveling wheels 3 have attached to the hubs or inner sides of said wheels the ratchet-disks 4, which traveling wheels and disks turn loosely on stub-axles 5, which stubaxles are securely connected in any convenient and well-known manner to the frame 1.
Upon the stub-axles are loosely mounted the sprocket-wheels 6, which sprocket-wheels rotate with the traveling wheels 3 when the loader proper is moved forward by reason of the detents 7 engaging with the teeth of the ratchet-wheels 4, said detents being held in proper contact by means of the springs 8. Behind the traveling wheels 3 is located the axle or shaft 9, which shaft is journaled, as hereinafter described. To the shaft 9 are connected the disks 10, but one disk being illustrated, which is shown in Fig. 7; butit will be understood thatadisk, such as 10, is to be connected to'each end of the shaft 9, or, in other words,
said disks being located near the ends of the shaft. The disks 10 are each provided with apertures 11, and through which apertures are located the crank-arms 12, as illustrated in Fig. 7, said crank -arrns being securely connected at their inner ends to the bars 13,to which tooth-bars are connected the teeth 14.
To the frame of the loader proper are securely connected in any convenient and wellknown manner the plates 15, which plates are provided with the cam-grooves 16, and in which cam-grooves travel the wheels 17, said wheels 17 being journaled upon the crankarms 12.
For the purpose of imparting a rotary motion to the shaft 9, together with the disks 10 and the diiferent parts connected to said disks, drive chains or belts 18 extend around the sprocket-wheels 6 and also around the 8 sprocket-wheels 19, said sprocket-wheels being securely connected in any convenient and well-known manner to the shaft 9. The camgrooves 16 are so formed or curved that as the shaft 9 rotates, together with the disks 10, go the cam-arms 12 will be rocked, so as to rock the tooth-bars 13, and thereby impart a swinging movement to said teeth 14:.
The object and purpose of providinga means of swinging or oscillating the teeth 14 during 5 the time the tooth-bars 13 are rotated around and with the shaft 9 are to provide for extending the teeth outward as they ascend and to draw or move the teeth inward as they doscend, or, in other words, to providea means for extending the teeth 14 so as to bring them into operative position as they are elevated and to bring them out of operative position when they descend.
For the purpose of causing the hay to be raked or gathered during the time the loader proper is moved forward the rake-teeth 20 are provided, which teeth are of the ordinary construction and form no particular'part of the present invention, except, of course, raketeeth similar to those shown must be employed.
The rake-teeth 20 are connected in any convenient and well-known manner to the head 21, which head is journaled to the bars 22, said bars being adjustably attached to the side members 23, said side members being connected to the frame 1 in any convenient and well-known manner, and for the purpose of setting the teeth to or from the cylinder or bars 13, carrying the teeth 14, the bars 22 are provided with the elongated slots 24, said bars 22 being held at the desired point of adjustment by means of suitable clamping-bolts 25.
For the purpose of adjusting the angularity of the teeth 20 the lever 26 is provided, which lever is securely connected in any convenient and well-known manner to the head 21 and said lever held at the desired point of adj ustment by means of the tooth-segment 27 and the catch 28.
For the purpose of preventing the hay from lodging or binding under the teeth 20 a cylinder constructed in substantially the same manner that the lower cylinder is constructed is provided and is located over the lower cyl inder and is provided with the teeth 29, said teeth'being connected to bars similar to the bars 13, to which bars are connected the rockarms 30, said rock-armsbeing provided with wheels 31, which wheels travel in the camgr'o'oves 32, formed in the plates 33, said plates 33 being fixed to the frame proper of the machine or to the side members thereof. The cam-grooves 32' are so formed that as the teeth 29 move downward they will be extended and as they move upward they will be receded, thereby releasing the hay after it has passed between the upper and lower cylinders proper.
For the purpose of providing a loader that will rake a wide space and at the same time deliver the hay by means of an endless carrier narrower than the space-rake I provide lateral conveyors, which lateral conveyors are located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 1, and, as shown, they consist of endless belts or canvas located around rollers 34 and 35, and for the purpose of imparting rotary motion to the rollers 34 said rollers are mounted upon shafts 36, which shafts extend rearward and are provided with the beveled gear-wheels 37, which gear-wheels mesh with the beveled gear-wheels 38, said beveled gearwheels 38 being mounted upon shafts 39, said shafts 39 being provided with the sprocketwheels 40, which sprocket-wheels are driven by drive-chains leading from thesprocketwheels 41. The lateral conveyers are each provided with the decks 42, which decks are provided with the slots or openings 43,through which openings or slots extend the conveyingteeth 44,Which conveying-teeth are connected to the bars 45, said bars being journaled in the blocks or heads 46, which blocks or heads travel upon the Ways or tracks 47. To the bars 45 are connected in any convenient and well-known manner the fingers 48, said fingers being for the purpose of preventing the teeth 44 from tilting backward during the time the hay is conveyed toward the main elevator.
For the purpose of bringing the teeth 44 out of the way or below the decks 42 the slots 43 terminate at a point where the teeth will strike against the inner ends of the slots, and for the purpose of allowing the teeth to turn the track or way 47 is cut away, as illustrated at 49, so as to allow the fingers 48 to drop down, as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 4. It will be understood that when the teeth 44 are brought around the rollers 34 and the fingers 48 will come upon the upper side of the tracks or ways 47, and thereby hold said fingers in an upright position during the time they are moved toward the main elevator.
The main elevator consists of a suitable frame, such as 50, which is connected to the main driving'frame in any convenient and well-known manner and is supported by the post 51. To the frame 1 is properly journaled the roller-shaft 52, and to the elevator-frame 50 is journaled the roller 53, around which rollers endless belts 54 or their equivalents are passed, and to the endless belts 54 are connected bars 55, which bars are provided with elevating-teeth 56.
The construction of themain elevator is of ordinary construction and needs no specific description here.
The roller-shaft 52 is driven by suitable sprocket-wheels, such as57, said sprocketwheels being driven by an endless belt leading from the sprocket-wheel 58.
For the purpose of providing an extended conveyer the hinged conveyer-section 59 is provided, which hinged conveyer-section is connected to the main elevator-frame by links 60, and when the section 59 is brought into its extended position the cog-wheel 61 will mesh with the cog-wheel 62, which cog-wheel meshes with the cog-wheel 63, it being under-- stood that the cog-wheel 63 is to be connected to the roller-shaft 53 in any convenient and well-known manner.
I do not claim the extended elevator-section or the means for imparting rotary motion to the extended elevator conveyer, inasmuch as such construction is shown in my former patent, No. 621,176, dated March 14, 1899.
For the purpose of communicating a rotary motion to the upper cylinder or reel, said cylinder being the one located between the raketeeth and the lower cylinder, I provide the drive-chain 64, which drive-chain leads from the sprocket wheel 65 up and over the sprocket wheels 66 and 67 and under the sprocket-wheel 68. The object and purpose of so locating the drive-chain 64 is to cause the upper cylinder to rotate in the opposite" direction from that of the lower cylinder in order that the hay may be carried between the upper and lower cylinders and deposited onto the various conveyers.
Itwill be understood that in order to properly convey the hay to the various elevators the lower cylinder should be inclosed by means of a suitable deck, such as 69, and the upper cylinder should also be properly inclosed by a suitable deck or casing 70. It will also be understood that the decks 69 and 70 should be provided with suitable slots or openings, such as 71 and 72, to allow the teeth let and 29 to be properly extended to move the hay forward.
By providing the fixed plates and locating the same at the ends of the two reels and providing said plates with cam-grooves a swinging or oscillating motion is given to the teeth during the time the tooth-bars are rotated around the shafts upon which the cylinderdisks are fixed, said cam-grooves being so located that the teeth will be extended at a time when the hay is to be carried forward onto the conveyers and elevator and withdrawn at a time when the hay is to be released from between the two reels. It will also be understood that by extending the teeth of the upper reel outward at a time when said teeth descend they will reach any hay that may be crowded upward under the rake-teeth, and as the teeth of the lower reel are extended outward at a time when they are being elevated the hay will be taken or fed between the two reels in an even and uniform manner, thereby preventing any clogging or choking of the hayand at the sametime preventing any winding or wrapping of the hay around the reels, which object is carried out by withdrawing or dropping the teeth toward the shafts of the reels.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a traveling frame, a tongue connected thereto, a rake-head provided with rake-teeth, means for holding the rake-head and rake-teeth in fixed adjustment, two reels located one above the other, fixed non-rotatable plates located at the ends of each of the reels and provided with camgrooves, reel-bars journaled in the rotatable heads of the reel and provided with angle portions, said reel-bars provided with teeth, lateral conveyers located upon opposite sides of the elevator, and an elevator extended rearward between the lateral conveyers and means for imparting motion to the lateral conveyers and to the elevator the lateral conveyers provided with slotted decks and the reels provided with casings or decks, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a frame mounted upon traveling wheels, a tongue connected thereto, a journaled rake-head provided with rake-teeth and an operating-lever, a lower reel or cylinder consisting of disks and toothbars, crank-arms journaled in the disks and provided with antifriction-rollers, tooth-bars connected to the crank-arms and carried by the rotating disks, fixed non-rotatable camgrooved plates located at the opposite ends of the reel and the antifriction-rollers of the crank-arms located in the cam-grooves, two
lateral conveyers located upon opposite sides of the elevator and the elevator located between the conveyers at its rear end, means for imparting motion to the elevator and to the lateral conveyers, and an upper reel or cylinder located above the lower reel or cylinder and below the rake-teeth, said reel pro vided with oscillating or rocking bars having teeth and slotted decks or casings located around the reels or cylinders, and means for imparting rotary motion to the cylinders or reels all arranged, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
