UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARLING SHAEFFER, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BUFFER STOP-KNOT FOR MUSICAL-INSTRUMENT STRlNGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,618, dated May 21, 1901.
nplicati'on filed Much 18, 1901. Serial No. 51,673. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern.'
Beit known that I, ARLING SHAEFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot Illinois, have invented a new and useful Buer Stop-Knot for Musical-Instrument Strings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the strings of musical instruments, such asv the guitar, mandolin, 85C., which strings have a tendency to part close up to the stop-knot at the bridge end of the instrument; and my object is to provide a buffer which cover's all or a portion of theknot and which serves as a bedding between the knot and the inside surface of the top of the instrument and the retainingpeg, so that substantially an vequal strain will be imposed all around the circurnference of the string and the intensity of its tension-pressure moment reduced at all times, but more especially when after long use its limit of elasticity has been almost attained, the same being described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinalsection of a portion of the top of a guitar and a cross-section of the bridge with a portion of a string with a buenknot and the retaining-pin in side elevation. Fig. 2 is the same as Fig. l, but shows the stop-knot in the usual position Without a buer. Fig. 3 shows two side elevations of an ordinary stop-knot-together with a portion of a string. Fig. 4L is an elevation showing a part of a string with the knot covered with a fine cord closely wound thereon to serve as a buffer and bedding. Fig. 5 is an axial section of a capsule of any fibrous or resilient material orof any plastic or combination of materials adapted to serve as a buffer or bedding and is shown in position covering the stop-knot in Fig. 6.
Similar letters indicate like parts tliroughmay be entirely or partially covered with a resilient or non-resilient cement and then covered with the buffer without the intent of the improvement being altered, which is to insure a practically equal strain at all sides of the string at the retaining-knot in addition to providing a buffer G or H for the purpose stated.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a musical-instrument string having a stop-knot, of a buer on the said knot, for the purposes hereinbefore stated.
2. In a musical-instrument string having a stop-knot, a buffer on the said knot composed of a yielding material or materials adapted to serve as a buffer and bedding therefor, for the purposes stated.
ARLING SHAEFFVER.
