ELECTRIC SWITCH.
(Ayplicnton Mod Apr. 27, 1900,) (Nn Model.)
Il A\\ mma, WASHINGTON n c soV UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH CHARLES DE JANISCH, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
ELECTRIC SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part lof Letters Patent No. 674,207, dated May 14, 1901.
Application filed April 27, 1900.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH CHARLES DE JANISGH, gentleman, residingat 121 Avenue des Champs Elyses,'P-aris, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an electric switch in which each contact-piece is operated by means of two movable buttons, which project alternatively beyond the casing of insulating material inclosing the contact-pieces. The arrangement of the said buttons, either one of which projects when the opposite button lies within the casing, prevents any cause of hesitation in operating the switch either torV turning on the electric current or for shutting off the same.
The invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of a four-button switch constructed according to my invention. Fig-2 `is a plan view of the same, the casing of the switch being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3a is a longitudinal section of the sliding switch.
The apparatus comprises a metal column a, rigidly iixed to a support b, made of insulating material and provided with a hole through which passes a rod c, capable of sliding hori- Zontally. The said rod terminates in two buttons d e, capable of projecting alternatively at each side of a casing or coverj1 put on the support b. The rod c, of insulating material, is embraced by the two elastic arms g of a .4o,contact-piece fixed to the support b and to which may be connected a conducting-wire h. Two buttons rand j, passing through the casing f, are pivoted to the ends of a cross-piece It, capable of oscillating or rocking on the rod c. The cross-piece k is formed by two metal wings or parts located at each side of the column a and connected together by a bearing or suitable cross-pieces. The ends of the cross-piece 7c are capable when depressed of rubbing alternatively against the yielding contact-pieces m fn, connected, respectively, with the conducting-wires p q.
Serial No. 14,596. (No model.)
The rod c carries toward its middle a metal bushing or sleeve r, which may be split in order to yieldingly press against the walls of the hole or bearing in the column a. The position andthe dimensions of the said bushing are so determined that in one of the extreme positions of the rod c, Fig. 3, the bushing r shall not bein contact with the piece g, while in the other extreme position of the rod c the bushing touches both the piece g and the column a.
The casing or coverfis held in place by a screw s, screwed into the column a, and of which the head may be provided with an insulating-cap t in order to prevent any inadvertent contact with the fingers. The stroke of the rod c may be limited by stops ink any suitable manner.
The wire h being connected to any suitable source of electrical supply and the wires p and q being connected, for example, the former, p, with a lamp and the latter, q, with a cluster of lamps or electrolier, it will be understood that in order to transmit the current to the lamp one has only to push therod c into the position in which the bushing r touches the piece g, and to bring the crosspiece la into contact with the piece m by pressing on the button t the current passes successively through the parts h, g, r, 7o, m, andp and thence to the lamp. If now the finger is pressed on the button j, the crosspiece k is rocked, the lamp is put out, and the current is transmitted to the electrolier through the parts h, g, r, k, n, and q. Finally, if the rod c is brought into the position shown in Fig. 3 by pressing on the button e the bushing r is separated from the piece g and the current is shut off.
I claim as my inventionl. A double switch comprising a sliding switch member and a contact adaptedto be engaged thereby, a rocking switch member fulcrumed on said sliding member, contacts adapted to be engaged by the rocking member, and means for operating the switch members.
2. A double switch comprising a non-conducting sliding switch member provided with a conducting portion, a stationary contact arranged to engage the conducting portion of said switch memberor the non-conducting IOO body thereof, .according to ,the position of the sliding switch. member, a conducting switch ,member mounted to rock on the sliding switch member and engaging the conducting portion of the sliding switch member simultaneously with the engagement of the conducting portion With the Said stationary contact, and additional contacts arranged to be engaged by the rocking switch member.
3. A doubleswitch comprising a casing, a sliding switch member supported therein and having a non-,conducting body with a conducting portion, push-buttons attached to said sliding switch member and arranged to. project, one at a time, at opposite ends of the casing, means for carrying an electric current to said conducting portion, a condncting switch melnnbermoneted to rock on the sliding switch member and arranged to engage the conducting portion of said sliding switch member, contacts arranged to be engaged by the rocking switch member, and
pushbuttons connected with the said member at opposite sides of itsy flcrum and arranged to project from the casing, one at a time.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presenceof tw@ Subscribing Witnesses.
