FRANK P. WISEBURN, OF BROOKLYN, AND LOUIS BUIILE, OF WOODHAVEN, NEW YORK.
BUNDLINGAPPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,148, dated May 14, 1901. Application led March 18, 1901. Seria] No. 51,612. (No model-1 T all whom t may concern:
Beit known that we, FRANK P. WISEBURN, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and LOUIS BUHLE,residingat Woodl1aven,Queens 5 county, State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bundling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification sufcient to enable others skilled in the art to ro which the inventionappertains to make and use the same.
Our improvementsrelate to means for binding and securing hanks or hands of tobacco or other material of a compressible nature;
x5 and the invention consists in certain special features in the construction and arrangement of parts herein described and claimed specifically. g
In the accompanying drawings we have zo. shown and described our invention as applied to the bundling of samples of tobacco, although we do not confine ourselves to such use, since it is obvious that it may be put to other similar uses with like result. Neither do we confine ourselves to the identical form and structure of parts shown, since various mechanical expedients may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and intent of our invention.
3o Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved bundling device; Fig. 2, an isometrical view ot' a sample of tobacco bundled in our device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the apparatus;
4, a top view of the same; Fig. 5, a sectionalelevation of the same upon plane of line 5 5, Fig'. l; and Fig. o, a horizontal section upon plane of line 6 6, Fig. 5, looking upward.
In sampling tobacco four or more hanks or hands, as the hanks are called, are usually 4o selected and bundled together, a certicatecardbeingattached. Eachhankorhandconsists of a number of leaves of tobacco the stems of which are bound together by strips of tobacco. As ordinarily bundled the ends of four, six, or more chosen hands are loosely brought together and secured by a cord or twine, and then a tape is used to secure the certificate card, the tape and card being sealed with wax. This requires skilled labor,`
5o and even then is a slow and tedious operation. The bundles thus formed vary in size and shape and degree of compression and are easily tampered with, since the fastenings and hanks or hands may be so manipulated that one or more of the hands or hanks may be'withdrawn and another grade of tobacco substituted. Our invention is designed to obviate these difficulties and to afford means for quickly and conveniently binding the hands or banks in such manner that the bun- 6o dies shall be uniform in arrangement and ap-` pearance and the ends of the several hands or han ks of which it is composed firmly compressed and secured against either lateral or longitudinal displacement. In accomplish- 63 ing this we use in conjunction with our bundling device the form of fastening set forth in our concurrent application, Serial No. 51,613, filed March 18, 1901, in which the 4 overlapping ends of a flexible inelastic band 7o' are secured in place by spikes which penetrate the ends of the hands or banks linderneath, and thereby hold the'latter against longitudinal displacement.
Our device is designed to be portable for the use of inspectors of tobacco or other material, who are required to sample tobacco, dac., in different localities; but it may be made permanent when the conditions of use render this desirable.
In the drawings, A represents a bench or stationary object to which our bundling device has been attached by means of the sharp ends h h of the hooksB B projecting from the rear of t-he sample-table O, the bottom of which isrigidly connected by the standards D D with the cross-head E, from the rear of which extend bracket-bearings e e, provided with binding-screws e e', by which the framework of the device may be secured and stead- 9o ied in position upon the stationary support A. Between the table and the cross-head E is mounted a screw F, engaging with a traveling nut G, having laterally-projectingarms g g, which engage the stirrups H H upon the lower ends of the compressing-strap I. This compression-strap I is slotted longitudinally at 2 to admit the lateral band-arms c c on the table C, formed with adjoining recesses or slots c c', to accommodate the strap I. The roo rear portion of the strap I carries a rearwardlyprojecting plateI i', which bears upon the banks to be bundled when the strap is low ered and distributes the strain.
The apparatus is used as follows: The traveling nut G being raised by the screw F by means of the hand-Wheelf to allow the strap I to be removed or elevated sufliciently to admit of the placing of the desired number of hands or banks J J, Fig. 2, the securingband K is laid transversely across the table C, with its ends 7c 75 extending out upon the arms c c. The hands or banks are then placed in position upon the table C and across the band K and the strap I lowered, so as to straddle the banks. It a certicate-card L is to be used,it is interposed between the bight of the strap and tbe ends of the banks, the plate t' protecting it against undue strain and also distributing the strain to thehanks. In any case the desired degree of compression is attained by means of the screw F or equivalent mechanical expedient, and the ends L: 7a of the secu ring-band K are then bent over within the slot of the compression-strap I and secured by means of spikes, as hereinbefore indicated. The compression-strap I is again loosened by means of the screw F, the bundie Withdrawn from the table C, and the operation repeated.
It is obvious that any mechanical expedient maybe substituted in lieu of the screw F with like result.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a compressing and bundling device, the combination of the supporting-table C, the straddlingstrap I, the stirrups H, secured to the end of the strap I, the traveling n ut G, formed with arms g, g, for engaging said stirrups, and the rotatable screw F, the Whole arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a compressing and bundling device, the combination of the supporting-table C, formed with the band-supporting arms c, c, and recesses c', c', tbe straddling-strap I, the stirrups I-I, secured to the end of the strap I, the traveling nut G, formed with arms g, g, for engaging said stirrups, and the rotatable screw F, the Whole arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. In a compressing and bundling device tbe combination of the supporting table formed with the band-supporting arms c, c, and recesses c', c', the standards D, D, the cross-head E, formed with the bracket-bearings e, e, the rotatable screw F, the traveling nut G, formed with the lateral arms g, g, and the straddling-strap I, formed with the slot t?, and with the stirrups II, the Whole arranged and operating substantially inthe manner and for the purpose described.
' 4. In a compressing and bundling device the combination ot the supporting-table C, formed with the band-supporting arms c, c, and recesses c', c', the straddling-strap I, formed with the plate i', tbe stirrups H, secured to the end of the strap I, the traveling nut G, formed with arms t, g, for engaging said stirrups, and the rotatable screw F, the Whole arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
