- LUBRICATO R.
G FI ATION formingar. of Letters Patent-No. 674,127, dated May 14, 19 01.
Application filed October 1, 1900.
To dll whom it may concer n: Be it knownthatLHENRY W. SIMMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City,
in the county of Bay and State oflMichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to lubricators or grease-clips; and the improvements consist in certain constructions and combinations of parts whereby the various objects of my invention are accomplished. These objects are,
ifirst, to provide a cup for feeding grease or other viscous substances, having a plunger mounted for progressive longitudinal movement on a swiveled screw and a secondary 'tube'or port passing through the plunger to keep it from turning and adaptedto feed oil, cooling-Water, or other liquid to the bearing independent of the grease-cup feed; secondly,
engage the bearing, thereby locking the cup to provide-an oil-feeding tube passing through the body of the grease-cup and adapted to against-turning; thirdly, to provide a cover forsaid cup, carrying a screw-plug or equivalent device adapted to engage the upper end of the secondary tube, and thereby lock the cover-against turning- I accomplish these objects by the means illustrated in the ac- 'companying drawings, throughout the severalviews of which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts.
Figure l isa' vertical sectional view of my improved cup. Fig. 2 is a bottom view.
, As is clearly shown in the drawings, the deviceconsists in a shell 1, fitted with a removable cover2, in which is swiveled a cen tral screw 3, turning loosely in the cover without advancing. A plunger 4 is threaded on the screw to force the contents of the cup out through theopening 1. The plunger is pre= vented from turning while the screw rotates by a secondary tube 5, that passes by a slidingfit thronghthe plunger and is screwed throughthe bottom of the cup, projecting below it. .The lower end of the tube 5 enters a hole provided in the bearing near the hole into which the nipple l of the cup isscrewed.
Serial No.'31,639. (No model.)
The tube 5 serves the triple purpose of a lock to prevent the plunger from turning, a means to lock the cup against unscrewing, and a conduit through whichoil, cleansing solutions, 850., can be injected into the bearing in case of-heating of the journal or other mishap. In the cover 2 I provide a screw-cap 2, having a cupped end 2 or a suitable project-ion to engage the upper end of the secondary tube 5. This cap serves a double purpose. It effectually prevents the cover 2 from turning or unscrewing, and .it forms a means by which oil may be readily inserted into the tube 5 without disturbing the cup-cover 2.
Cups that are subjected to much jarring may be provided, if desired, with aratchet 6, secured to the handle,-and a pawl 6, secured to the cover and engaging with the ratchet, thereby preventing the screw from rotating backward.
The upper end of the tube 5 is preferably provided with a slot 5 to admit of screwing it down with a screw-driver. I
To attach the lubricator to the journal-box of the machine on which it is to be used, the
nipple l of the cup is first screwed into the journal-box and rendering it impossible to unscrew or jar loose. The cup having been filled with grease or similar lubricant-the cup and the cover 2 is screwed on. The cover is turned to the position where the tube 5 registers with-the hole provided in the cover for the cap 2, and the cap is then screwed down, securely locking the cover against turning.
By the above means I provide a cup that is screw 3and plunger 4 are inserted into the simple, strong, self-locking, and capable of feeding either oil, grease, or cleansing solution to the bearing independent of the screwfeed and without removing either the cup or its cover 2 from the journal-box. The structural details of the cup-body may be varied at pleasure without departing from my invention.
What I claim is- 1. In a lu-bricator having a central screw 5 anda plunger traveling thereon; a tube ex- .tending the length of theeup, through the v. plunger, and through the bottom of the cup I at the side of the discharge-nipple for entering a-holein the journal-box, thereby look- 'ing the cup-a'g'ains turning, and also form ing a eontliri'tffor; uid to the pentlent;of, tl1'e main feed.
' 7 2 In a lub rieat6r2havinga traveling plunto of and passing through the plunger to preger; a tube located oi'1 one side of the center vent itfrom turning, yet permitting its progressive movement along the axis'of the cup,
journal, indeclose the tube and lock turning.
4. In a lubricator havinga traveling plunget; the combination of a tube extending the 1 length of the cup, through the plunger at one side oi the axis, thereby loekingth e plunger against turning yet permitting its progressive longitudinal movement, and efitending through the bottom of the eup,'be1o w Whi ,-h it projects; the cover of the cup provided with a hole registering with said tube; and a cap -'"removably inserted in the hole and adapted to engage the .upperend of the tube, thereby olosingthetubeandloekingitagainst turning.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of'two witnesses.
, HENRY W. SIMMS.
