draulic Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is a hydraulic press for the manufacture cold or hot of any ceramic products presenting as an essential characteristic the removal from the mold by the withdrawal and separation of a movable frame forming the sides of the mold and controlled by a valve. The two other walls (the top and bottom) of the mold consist of a matrix fixed on the pressing-plunger and a die fixed on the base of the machine.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a vertical mid-section of a press constructed according to one embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the sectional mold, being a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. eisa plan of the bed of the press, being in horizontal section on the line 4 4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal mid-section, on a larger scale, of the controlling-valve.
In the embodiment of onrinvention shown the frame forming the sides of the mold is divided into sections which can be separated after each pressing operation to facilitate the removal of the pressed object from the mold. Among other advantages it allows of the manufacture of articles which are molded or have pressed patterns upon their sides.
The press consists of a base a, connected by columns I) to the head 0, which carries the pressure-cylinder (Lin which moves the pressing-plunger 6. Above the cylinder 01 is a cylinderf, of smaller diameter, in which there is a plunger g, connected at the top to a crosshead h, having two rods 2', the lower ends of which are fixed to earsj, projecting at the sides of the pressing-plunger. On the plunger is bolted a matrix it, having in intaglio the pattern to appear in relief on the manufactured article. This matrix can be replaced as required, owing to the presence of the grooves Z in the lower face of the pressing-plunger, which hold the heads of the fixing-bolts m. On the base a is fixed in like Serial No. 725,987. (No model.)

The frame, which at the desired time closes in the upper part of the die n, so as to form the side walls of the mold, consists of four parts 0, which by meeting completely surround the die n, forming a rectangle. of the parts 0 rests on a table p, carried by plungers g, which work in cylinders r, the sides 0 being raised or lowered by the ascent or descent of this table. They have also each a tail 5, extending down below the plane of the table 10 and jointed to two toggle-linkstt, jointed together at 'Lb, the outer link being itselfjointed toa lugmprojectingdown from the table 19. The plunger-s 2 move independently of the plungers q, and their vertical reciprocations move the joints u, and consequently effect the movements of the sides 0 of the frame to ward or away from the die 72.
All parts of the mold-the matrix It, the die n, and the sides 0are hollow and can be cooled by circulation of water.
The controlling-valve 1, shown separately in Fig. 5 as a slidevalve, allows of controlling by hand all the successive movements of the various parts during an operation. Water under pressure enters the valve-box 3 by the inlet 2; The valve 4 puts the ports 5, 6, 7, and 8 in communication either with the inlet of the pressure-water or with the escape-port 9. Each of the ports 5 G 7 8 COIl1- municates with a pipe marked with the same numeral in Fig. 2. The port 5 leads by pipes 5 with the cylinders r, in which work the plungers g, by which the table p and frame 0 are raised and lowered. The port 6 leads by pipes 6 to the cylinders w, in which work the plungers z for opening and closing the frame. The port 7 leads by pipe 7 to the top of the main cylinder d, the plunger of which moves the matrix, and finally the port 8 leads by pipe 8 to the cylinderf, the plunger 9 of which raises the pressing-plunger.
The operation of the press is as follows, having four phases or periods:

First period.-0n moving the slide from position 0 to position the port 5 is opened to communicate with the inlet 2, the cylinders r are charged, and the plungers q ascend, raising the tablep and the four sides of the frame, which remain separated. The port 8 is closed, the cylinder f remaining charged, and the pressing-plunger remains up above the die.
Second period-The slide being moved to 11, the port 5 is still open to pressure-Water, and the plungersg of the cylinders rhold up the table, so that the die n is below the level of the upper faces of the sides 0 of the frame. The port 6 is also open, so that pressure-Water acts in the cylinders w, raising the plungers z and the joints of the links if 15, causing the sides 0 to come against the die, thus forming the mold.
Third per'i0d.The slide being moved to 12, the ports 5 and 6 remain open, and consequently the plungers q and 2 keep the frame up and closed. The port 7supplies pressurewater to the main cylinder d, and the port 8 communicates through the hollow of the slide with the outlet 9. Thus while the cylinderf empties and d fills, the plunger e descends and compresses the material in the mold.
Fourth period.The slide is moved back to the position shown in Fig. 5, putting the ports 5, 6, and 7, and consequently the cylind ers r,-w, and d, in communication with the outlet 9 and the port 8 in communication with the supply of pressure-water. The cylinders r are emptied by the weight of the tablep, which descends, lowering the plungers q. The table presses on the heads y of the plungers z, pushing them downward, emptying the cylinders w, which allow of the sides 0 being separated. The plunger 9 ascends, raising the plunger 6 and emptying the main cylinder (1. This completes the series of movements for one operation, leaving the apparatus ready to operate again.
We claim as ourinvention the following-defined novel features, substantially as hereinbefore specified, namely:
1. A hydraulic press comprisinga movable matrix, a cylinder and piston for moving it, a die forming the bottom of a mold, a frame forming the sides of the mold, and consisting of sections which approach to and recede from one another, and auxiliary plungers and cylinders adapted to cause said sections to move toward or from one another, and a manuallyoperated controlling-valve for directing water-pressure to the respective cylinders, substan tially as set forth.
2. A hydraulic press comprising a movable matrix, a cylinder and piston for moving it, a die forming the bottom of a mold, a frame forming the sides of the mold, and consisting of sections which approach to and recede from one another and which are adapted to descend relatively to said die to ass below the level thereof in order to facilitate removing the molded article, and auxiliary plungers and cylinders adapted to impart said risingand-falling movements and to cause said sections to move toward or from one another, and a man ually-operated controlling-valve for directing water-pressure to the respective cylinders, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a hydraulic press of a matrix 70, cylinder d, and plunger 6, for moving said matrix, a fixed lower die n forming the bottom of a mold, a frame forming the sides of the mold consisting of sections 0 0, a table 10 carrying said sections and movable vertically, hydraulic means for imparting vertical movements to said table, said sections 0 0 movable on said table toward and from said die, auxiliary cylinders and pistons connected to said sections for so moving them, and a controlling-valve for directing waterpressure to said cylinders respectively, operating in manner substantially as set forth.
4. The combination in a hydraulic press of a matrix 70, cylinder (1, and plunger 6 for moving said matrix, a fixed lower die 02 forming the bottom of a mold, a frame forming the sides of the mold consisting of sections 0 0, a table 9 carrying said sections and movable vertically, hydraulic means for imparting vertical movements to said table, said sections 0 0 movable on said table toward and from said die, toggle-links tt engaging respectively said table and said sections, auxiliary cylinders w and plungers ,2 connected to the mid dle joint of said toggle-links for moving said links to displace said sections 0 0, and a controlling-valve for directing water-pressure into the respective cylinders adapted to operate substantially as set forth.
5. A hydraulic press comprising a movable matrix, a hydraulic cylinder and plunger for operating it, a die forming the bottom of a mold, a frame forming the sides of the mold, said frame movable relatively to said die to pass below the .level thereof to facilitate removing the molded article, auxiliary cylinders and plungers for imparting said movements to said frame relatively to said die, and a controlling-valve for controlling the flow of Water to said cylinders respectively, comprising a pressure-inlet port, an exhaust-port, ports leading to the respective cylinders, an operating device and slide-valve operated thereby for connecting said last-named ports in proper succession each first with said pressure-port to admit water under pressure to its appropriate cylinder, and by a subsequent m ovement with said exhaust-port to discharge said water from said cylinder, substantially in the manner set forth.
6. A hydraulic press comprising a movable matrix, a hydraulic cylinder and plunger for operating it, a die forming the bottom of a mold, a frame forming the sides of the mold, said frame movable relatively to said die to pass below the level thereof to facilitate removing the molded article, auxiliary cylinits corresponding cylinder, and subsequently ders and plungers for imparting said movements to said frame relatively to said die, and a manually-operated controlling-valve for controlling the flow of water to said cylinders respectively, comprising a pressure-inlet port, an exhaust-port, ports leading to the respective cylinders, an operating device and a slidevalve moved thereby movable over said lastnamed ports and adapted in successive positions to connect said ports each first with the inlet-port to admit water under pressure to with the exhaust-port to discharge said water from said cylinder in the manner substanl5 tially as set forth.
