"y SELF-CLOSING FAUlc-ET.
SPGIFICATI-ON forming part of ,Letters Patent No. 673,897., dated May 14, 19,01.y
` Appnalnn ined Jnyio, 1900.
To all whom, tuta/y concern: s
kBe it known that I, DAVID'MANLY BREDIN,
a subject of HerMajesty the Queen ofGre-at Britain, residing at Picton, inlthe county of Prince Edward, Province of Ontario, Canada,
have invented certain new and useful Imf provements inSelf-Glosing Faucets; and I do hereby declare that. the following is afull, clear, and exact rdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
vMy `*invention relates to. improvements in Y self-closin g faucets especially designed for use on vesselsorcasks which contain slow-run-i ning fluids, such as molasses and Syrups.
One object of the invention is to provide means for automatically closing the faucet or tap when a predetermined quantity of the liquidshall have been drawn from the cask or vessel-and,furthermore, to construct the device vin a way which'permits it to be adjusted so as to vary the period of the closure accordf ing to the quantityof liquid which it may be desired to draw from a cask. i
A further object is to simplify the construction, Vpromote the efficiencyand accuracy of the device, and cheapenfthe cost of manufacture. y
Further objects and advantages ofthe in; Vention will appearin thecourse of the subl joined description, and the novelty in the coming faucet embodying my invention.
binationof devices and in the construction and arrangement of parts will'be defined by the claim. v
To enable others to understand the invention, I have illustrated a preferred embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings,
.forming ua part of this specification, and in responding parts in each of the several figures of the drawings.
10 designates` the stem or body of a faucet or tap which may have a male-threaded inner end to adapt it to be secured in a cask, bar
SerialrNjo) 23,161. (Normoclelnl i rel, or other vessel which contains a slow-running liquid, or saidv stem or body maybe attached to thecask by any other preferred means. way 1l ,through which the liquid from the'cask is adapted toiiow, andat or near its outer end said stem is furthermore providedwith a g vertical opening 12, the latter interceptng This stem has a longitudinalY liquid- Y l the liquid-Way 11. v Said vertical opening eX-Y Y tendsy through the stem or body, soas to have f its ends exposed on the top and r bottomvside f of the body, the lower part` of said? opening formingv the exit fory the liquid rwhichV flows through the liquid-wayll. f
13 designates rthepiugsvhiehis fitted snugly i in the vertical opening of the body for-the 4purpose'oi" normally closingtlleliquid-Wayll,
so as to cutothe dow of the liquid.; butithis plug'is capable of vertical movement in the bodyor stem of the faucet by the automatic" devices of myinvention, wherebyaplug may'A be raised on'adjustment of; the faucettoopen the lowerpart of the vertical openingv'12, andl thereby establish an outlet for the liquidffrom f the liquid-way 11.
The stem or Ebody 14, across which extends `the scale-beam 15. This' scale-beam is fulcrumed ata pointinr is provided at a point l near the plug with an upstanding short post` termediate of its length to thisshort post rby y the bolt or pin 18, so as to forinrthe long and short arms in said scale-beam. r The long arm of the scale-beam has a series of graduations 16, and on said arm is slidablyfitted the v co'unterpoise 17 the latter'adapted to traverse the grad nations of the beam. The short arm of this beam yis provided in its upper edge with ar notch 19, adapted to receive a bail, which suspends the vessel-holding platform presentlyr described. Said short arm of they on its fulcrum and also enables the plug to have the desired vertical play in the opening of the stem or body, whereby each element IOO vlever binding on the" plug,v 'oijlvic'efversa Awhich permitfsit'to engagewiththe 4shoulder/ 1 5 .ofr 'the ylatch when the "plug is'vinl its lowered 1- position '.to closetheliquid-.outletthrough the faucet,'whereby the l'plug islocked Zi'orv 'the V i @fthe-liquid, i .l f-Thevessel-iinto Whichthe liquid is drawn is designed to be placed-'on a platform. 25,` tol This bailiis made-,from wire, and in the em- .fqgnstru'ctedto provid@ Athe diverging'legs' 27.

Th 'p hes'c'alegbeambytting the u'pperlportion the;` bail.,ov erithe edge of theshortarm of 9; here'01",jthus.retaining` the; bailv in place fceive'-4 they liquid.` The operator adjusts the termined by the weight of the liquid which is to ybe' drawn from the cask,A and the vessel .5o latch 221is retracted fromengagement with the stud, thus releasing tlie'plug and permitting itr to be opened by the weight vof the scale-beam and the counterpoise thereon. T he liquid now flows through the'faucet and into the .vessel onA the platform until the desiredquantity of liquidfshall have accumulated in said vessel, at which-time the weight of the load in the vessel overcomes the gravity of the counterpoise and pulls downwardlyon the short arm of the scalelbeam, whereby the stud 24 is automatically engaged with the shouldered latch for they purpose of locking the vertically-movable plug in'its lowered poa manner to cut off the escape of `,the liquid, andthe vessel containing the liquid may now purpose of preventing thefescapef and .waste 1 51j Which ".,isfastened the .suspending-bail' 26."
