W/ TNE SSE S IN VE N TOR UNTTEE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX NEWGARDEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
APPARATUS FOR MARKING AND TRIMMING LOWER EDGES 0F SKIRTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,782, dated May '7, 1901. Application filed September 21, 1900. serial No. 30,663. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX NEWGARDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 1840 Lexington avenue, New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Marking and Trimming Lower Edges of Skirts, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying d rawings, formingapart thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved apparatus for marking and trimming the lower edges of skirts; and it consists, essentially, ofa platform havinga semicircular front edge provided with a ledge along the said semicircular front to act as a backing, against which the edge of the'skirt is marked. The said ledge is made of two sections meeting at the front of the device, one section being securely fastened to the platform and the other section being adjustably fastened,so as to admit of being raised or lowered. The platform is further provided with marking-arms to conform with the semicircular shape of the platform and adjnstably attached to the platform, so as to admit of proper adjustment for marking skirts.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement over a previous application of mine, filed March 29, 1900, bearing Serial No. 10,586, and allowed May 21, 1900.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a general perspective view of my device, showing one of the marking-arms removed and showinga portion of the skirt in the position it will assume preparatory to marking the cutting edge when worn by an individual standing upon the platform. Fig. 2 is a plan of the platform, showing the two markingarms and ledge. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the rod supporting the marking-arm. Fig. 4 is a side View of same, showing the markingarm partially in section and drawn away from the platform and also showing the movable section of the ledge partly raised above the platform; and Fig. 5 is a detail view.
In the practice of my invention I provide a platform A, havinga semicircular front a and rounded rear corners a. Attached to this platform are the brackets 19, formed with an upright cylindrical portion 1).
A rod b engages through the said cylindrical portion 1) and is provided at its upper end with an angnlar arm which is adapted to engage and slide in the jaws 0 formed upon a plate 0, which is attached to the marking-arms O. The said marking-arms C are segmental in shape and form quadrants, which are adapted to engage against the ledges D and D. The ledges are semicircular in shape and conform with the front end of the platform. The ledge D is securely fastened to the platform, while the ledge D is mounted upon the rods d, which engage in openings formed by the plates (1, and is adapted to be raised or lowered and securely held in position by means of the setscrew 01 The plates d are securely fastened to the front of the platform by 'means of the screws (1 The marking-arms O are adapted to slide upon the arms 19 and are held in position when against the ledges D and D by means of the set-screw c, which engages against the aforesaid arm b The height of the marking-arms O is regulated by means of the set-screws c, which engage in the upper part of the cylinder portions 1) and against the rod 12 In the use of myapparatus the wearer-stands upon the platform and the skirt to be trimmed is allowed to fall over the sides of same, the arms 0 having been previously drawn back. The arms 0 are then slid back until they come in contact with the skirt against the side of the platform or ledges at the height at which it is desired to trim the skirt. Any suitable means may be employed for marking the lines along the marking-line. This apparatus particularly determines the length of the front and side portions of the skirt.
A particular advantage of this device over my previous invention is the employment of the stationary and adjustable ledges D and D, respectively. By the use of the adjustable ledge D, I am enabled to trim skirts which do notreach to the platform. By properly adjusting the ledge D to the height of the skirt I may mark same for trimming after raising the marking-arm up to the proper height and bringing it against the said adjustable ledge.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In an apparatus for trimming the lower edges of skirts, a platform having semicircular front and rounded rear edges, segmental marking-arms mounted upon a supportingrod and adapted to slide upon the upper end of said supporting-rod, brackets fastened to the semicircular portion of said platform and formed with a cylindrical portion adapted to receive the supporti n g-rod carrying the m arking-arm, and means forsuitably adjusting the said platform, an adjustable ledge fastened to the front end of platform and fastened to the platform so as to admit of vertical adjustment, segmental marking-arms mounted upon supporting arms and rod and adapted to slide upon the supporting-arms of the supporting rod and engage against the said ledges, set-screws mounted upon the said marking-arms and adapted to engage against the said supporting-arms and lock the marking-arms in position against the said circular ledges, and a set-screw mounted in the supporting-bracket adapted to regulate the height of the aforesaid marking-arms, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two Witnesses, this 31st dayof July,
MAX NEWGARDEN.
