To all wwwt it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM J. HOLWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manseld, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Soldering-Iron, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvelnents in self-heating soldering-irons.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of self-heating soldering-irons and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one adapted to employ a solid copper head or soldering-tip and capable of heating the inner end of the same and of directing the flame into a cylindrical form and of concentrating it against the copper head or soldering-tip, whereby the latter will be practically enveloped in a thin sheet of name throughout the major portion of its length.
The invention consists in the construction' and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a soldering-iron constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line l Ll. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the inner conical sleeve of the name-concentrating device.

1 designates a reservoir designed to contain gasolene or other suitable liquid-hydrocarbon fuel and arranged at the inner end of a hollow handle 2 and provided with a suitable iilling-opening 3 and cap 4, located at one side, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings. The reservoir may be constructed in any suitable manner, and it communicates with a tube or pipe 5, which extends through the hollow handle 2, and the latter, which is preferably constructed of wood, may have a lining of asbestos or other cylindrical body 6, composed of a cylindrical v inner portion 7 and an outer annular portion 8, connected With the inner cylindrical portion by arms 9, 10, and 11. The arms 9 are solid, and the arms 10 and 1l are provided with passages, the passage of the arm 10 being in communicationyvith the pipe or tube 5 and being adapted to convey the liquid hydrocarbon to an annular generating-chamber 12, located within the outer annular portion 8 of Lthe body, at the outer end thereof. The passage ll, which is located at the opposite side of the body from the passage of the arm 10, extends from the annular gas generating chamber to a transverse passage 13, located at the inner cylindrical portion of the body and communicating with a centrally-arran ged burner 14E, extending outward from the inner cylindrical portion 7, as clearlyillustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The inner portion of the outer annular part of the body is provided with an annular' series of apertures 15, which' are adapted to admit air into the space or chamber 16, and the bottom or inner wa1l17 ofthe chamber 16 is provided with a central opening and has an annular flange or wall 18 extending inward from the same and projecting into the space within the annular portion 8. By this construction air is admitted into the cylindrical body to support the combustion, and the discharge of the vapor is controlled by a needle-valve 19, having a stem extending through the tube 5 and the reservoir 1 and provided at its rear end with a handle 20. In order to retard the flow of the gasolene or other liquid fuel and render the same uniform, a spirally-coiled wire 22 is arranged Within the inner cylindrical portion of the body and is disposed around the central valve-socket 7, through which the valve-stem 21 is adapted to move.
