ISAIE JACQUES, OE WHITINSVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED HAND-VISE AND PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,605, dated May 7, 1901.
Application filed March 14, 1901. Serial No. 61,078. (No model.)
T0 on whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAIE JACQUES, a subject of the King of England, residing at Whitinsville, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combined Hand-Vise and Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gripping-tool which has been especially designed for use either as a hand-vise or as an ordinary pair of pincers or pliers; and the especial object of this invention is to provide a strong, durable, compact, and efiicient tool in which the parts are so combined that a heavy gripping leverage may be secured and the tool adjusted either by a screw adjustment when the operating-handle is held stationary or by the direct leverage of the operating-handle.
In the construction herein illustrated the gripping-jaws of the tool are connected by links, so as to be maintained in parallel relation with respect to each-other; and a further object of this invention is to provide one of the pairs of jaw-operating links with cooper; ating cutting edges, enabling them to be used for cutting ofi wires or similar purposes.
In the accompanying drawing the figure illustrates a side view, partially broken away, of a combination tool adapted to be used either as a screw-wrench or as a pair of pliers.
The form of tool embodying my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawing consists, essentially, of two plier-arms or side bars A, which are pivotally connected at their lower ends to an end piece or tip B. At their upper ends the plier-arms A extend into slots and are pivotally connected to the jaws C. The jaws C are preferably maintained in parallel relation with respect to each other by means of pivotally-connected cross-links D, which are pivoted at their upper ends to the jaws C and are provided at their lower ends with pins extending into slots in the jaws C. Two sets of cross-links D, one at each side of the tool, are preferably employed, although one such set of cross-links may be dispensed with, if desired.
The operating connections for adjusting the jaws C, as herein illustrated, comprise a yoke shaped adjusting lever or handle G, which is pivotally connected at one end to a support or link H, pivoted on one of the side bars A. Journaled in the operating-handle G is a nut or cylindrical piece Iythreaded into which is an adj usting-rod E. The adjusting-rod E is swiveled at its. upper end in a piece K, connected by links L to operate the cross-links D. By means of this construction when it is desired to secure a quick action of the jaws C the operating-handle G maybe. moved out and up, as illustrated in the drawing, or swung back alongside of the tool when said tool is to be used as a pair of pliers, and, on the other hand, when it is desired to adjust the width of the opening between the jaws C, or when it is desired to obtain a wrench or hand-vise action therefrom, the operating-handle G may be held stationary in its swung-down or normal position, and the adjustment may be secured by means of the screw-threaded rod E, which is provided with a handle J at its lower end.
In order to provide for cutting off wires or for similar purposes, either or both of the sets of cross-links D may be provided with recesses to form a cutting-notch, as I.
I am aware that numerous changes may be made in the relative proportions and arrangements of parts in a tool constructed according to my invention by those who are skilled in the art, and I do not wish, therefore, to be limited to the construction I have herein shown and described; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. As an article of manufacture,a combined hand-vise and pair of pliers comprising jaws, an operating-handle, and a screw-threaded connection between the jaws and operatinghandle, which may be adjusted when the operating-handle is held stationary and it is desired to use the device as a hand-vise, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of plier-arms, jaws pivoted to said plier-arms, cross-links for maintaining the jaws in parallel relation with respect to each other, an operating-handle, and a longitudinally-movable rod and links for connecting said operating-handle to move the jaws, substantially as described.
3. As an article of man ufacture,a combined hand-vise and pair of pliers comprising plierjaws, means for maintaining said plier-jaws in parallel relation with respect to each other,
an operating-handle, and a screw-threaded connection between the jaws and operatinghandle which may be adjusted when the operating-handle is held stationary and it is desired to use the device as a hand-vise, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of plier-arms Which are pivoted at one end, jaws pivotally mounted on the opposite ends of said plier-arms, cross-links pivoted together and pivoted to the jaws at one end, and having pins for engaging slots in the jaws at their opposite ends to maintain said jaws in parallel relation with respect to each other, an operating-handle, and connections from said operating-handle for operating the jaws, substantially as described.
5. In a combined hand-vise and pair of pliers, the combination of plier-arm's pivoted in a'n end piece or tip, jaws pivoted at the free ends of the plier-arms, cross-links pivoted together and pivoted at their upper ends to the jaws, and provided at their lower ends erases;
with pins engaging slots in the jaws to maintain said jaws in parallel relation with respect to each other, the said cross-links being provided with notches to form a cutter for.
cutting Wires or similar purposes, a screwthreaded rod and) connected to the crosslinks, an operating-handle pivoted at one end to a link, and a nut mounted in said opcrating-handle and threaded onto the rod,
said parts being arranged so that the rod will
