FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 672,595, dated April 23, 1901.
Application filed July 31, 1900.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, REGINALD E. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hayward, in the county of Sawyer and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnaces designed especially for burning sawdust, its object being to provide means for causing more perfect combustion of the fuel and more perfect control of the fire than in the ordinary construction.
To this end my invention consists in the improve ments in the grate and attachments hereinafter specifically described and claimed.
In the accompaning drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a brokenaway perspective view showing the grate and the supporting devices therefor. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the grate-support and air-supply device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a grate-bar, and Fig. 4: is a bottom view of the bar.
In the drawings, A represents a furnace of ordinary construction provided with the firebox opening 2. Arranged within the fire-box opening is a dome-shaped grate B, made up of the grate-bars 3. The bottom of each of these grate-bars rests upon a ring 4:, which in turn rests upon the ledge .5 of the fire-box. The grate-bars are tapered toward their upper ends to form a dome-shaped grate, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper ends of the gratebars rest upon the top of the central supporting device 0. This device is made up of a hollow standard open at its lower end and carrying a detachable top piece 6, provided with perforations 7. The standard is preferably provided with a central perforate section 8 and is supported by legs 9, carried by the flaring bottom 10 of the standard. The ring 4, which. rests upon the ledge 5 and supports the grate, may be of any desired construction and made in one or several pieces, as may be desired. By having the grate of the dome shape shown the sawdust is distributed over a large area and is supplied with a greater quantity of air than in the ordinary construction. By having the central Serial No. 25,399. (No model.)
supporting-standard hollow and perforated at its top air is allowed to pass to the top of the grate-bars, keeping the same from warping. The perforations 8, which are arranged in the standard below the grate, will allowa current of air through the standard in case the bottom of the standard becomes closed by ashes in the ash-pit.
The furnace has only been shown conventionally in the drawings, and it is evident that it can be changed without departiing from the idea of myinvention. The fire-box is preferably circular, but may be of any desired shape.
While my invention is designed particularly for the burning of sawdust, it may be used for the burning of any other suitable fuel.
I claim- 1. In a furnace of the class described, the combination with the fire-box, of a domeshaped grate arranged therein, a central supporting standard resting at its lower end upon the base of the furnace and abutting at its upper end againstthe top of the dome to serve as a support therefor, said standard being perforated at its upper end and being open at its lower end some distance above the base of the furnace.
2. In a furnace of the class described, the combination with the fire-box, of a domeshaped grate therein, and a central supporting hollow standard therefor, said standard being open at both ends and provided With perforations in its wall below the grate.
3. In a furnace of the class described, the combination with the fire-box, of a domeshaped grate supported therein, a central hollow supporting-standard for said grate,
REGINALD E. DAVIS.
