To all whom, t pray concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EDWARD Seamu- PER, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Water Heaters and Puriers,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in feed-water heaters; and it consists in the novel construction,combination,and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1 indicates a longitudinal view, partly in section, of my improved horizontal feed-water heater. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view taken on line y of Fig. 1. l
Similar reference characters indicate like parts wherever they occur throughout the several views.
Referring to said drawings, 1 is a horizontal cylindrical shell having a centrally-disposed tube or pipe 2, the ends of which are respectively secured in the heads of said cylinder. The forward end of said tube is connected with a water-supply pipe 3, provided with a valve-chamber 4, in which a valve is located for the purpose of regulatingr the ad mission of water to said tube 2, the said valve being connected to a vertical stem 5, which projects through a stuffing-box 6, forming part of said valve-casing. The said stem is connected with an arm 7, the inner end of which is pivotally connected to asmall bracket 8, secured to the valve-casing. The outer end of the arm 7 is connected to the rod9, the lower end of said rod being connected to a horizontal arm 10, which projects through a stuffing-box 1l in the head of said cylinder into the interior of said cylinder and is attached to the arm 12, which carries a iloat 13. A series of vertical pipes 14, the lower ends of which are connected to and communicate with said tube 2, carry a number of corrugated pans 15, the ends of which are higher than the sides, so as to compel water discharged through said pipes 14 therein to run into or drop down upon the series of horizontal pans 16, arranged on brackets 17, secured around said tubes, and thence from each successive pan into the bot-tom of twhe cylinder. Said cylinder is provided on one side thereof with an auxiliary chamber 18 which communicates with said cylinder by means of the opening 19. lt also communicates with the steam-space of the cylinder by means of a pipe 20 and with a pump or boiler (not shown) by means of a pipe 21. Said auxiliary chamber is provided with a blow-off pipe 22, the cylinder also being provided with a blow-off pipe 23, located at either end.
The steam-inlet 24 communicates with a series of chambers 25, located on one side of the cylinder, interiorly thereof, and communicates or opens into said cylinder immediately above the pans in the forward end of the same. The said cylinder is provided with a skim mer 0r strainer 27, located at high-Water mark therein and communicates with the eX- terior by means ofthe pipe 28. Said strainer consists of a trough provided with a top seated on projections on the upper side of the trough, so that a narrow space is formed between the lower edge of the top aud the upper edge of the trough to prevent water dripping from the pans from falling into said trough and yet to admit water, or rather strain the water, in the cylinder.
The operation of my apparatus is as follows, to wit: The valve being opened, water is permitted to enter the centrally-disposed tube 2, and from thence it ascends through pipes 14 into the upper series of pans supported upon the. upper end of said pipes and from thence falling from each successive pan into the bottom of the cylinder. Steam is adimiti ed through the steam-supply pipe and passing through the several steam-chambers is discharged into the cylinder for the purpose of heating the water contained therein. Immediately the water is raised to a certain altitude the float is correspondingly elevated, which closes the valve and prevents any further admission of cold water until the iioat falls with the descending Water-level and opens the valve.
Having describedY my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a horizontal cylindrical feed-water heater and puriiier, the combination of a shell, a centrally-disposed pipe, a series of independ- IOO ent water-troughs arranged above and independently in iuid communication with said pipe, the said-shell having a steam-compartment in the forward end thereof which is provided with a series of steam-channels opening into the shell, and a vertical series of independent horizontally-disposed pans arranged beneath and slightly to one side of said troughs to catch the water issuing therefrom, su bstantially as set forth.
2. In a horizontal cylindrical feed water heater and purifier, the combination of a shell, a centrally-disposed pipe, a series of independent Water-troughs arranged above and independently in fluid communication with said pipe, the said shell having a steam-com partment ih the forward end thereof which is provided with a series of steam-channels opening into the shell and said shell being also provided with a separate auxiliary chamber in fluid communication with the water and steam spaces of said shell, substantially as set forth.
3. In a horizontal cylindrical feed water heater and purifier, the combination of a shell,
a centrally-disposed pipe, a series of independent water-troughs arranged above and independently in uid communication with said pipe, a vertical series of horizon tally-disposed pans arranged beneath and slightly to one side of said troughs to catch the water issuing therefrom,the saidshellhavingasteamcompartment in the forward end thereof provided with a series of steam-channels opening into the shell, and automatic means to regulate the admission of Water to said central pipe, substantially as set forth.
4. In a horizontal cylindrical feed-water heater and purifier, the combination of a shell, a centrally-disposed pipe in fluid communication with a Water-supply pipe, a valve arranged in said Water-supply pipe adapted to control the admission of Water to said centrally-disposed pipe, a float arranged in the shell and operatively connected to the valve to operate said valve by the changing levels of water in the shell, a series of independent water-troughs arranged above and independently in iiuid communication with said central pipe, the said shell having a steam-compartment in the forward end thereof provided with a series of steam-channels opening into the shell, substantially as set forth.
5. In a feed-water heater, the combination with a shell,l of a water-supply pipe disposed centrally therein, Water-pans arranged in se ries, one above the other, on opposite sides of said pipe and extending longitudinally thereof, and a water-trough located above the pans and adapted'to deliver water from its opposite sides downwardly to both series of pans, said trough being in Iiuid communication with the pipe.
6. In a feed-water heater, the combination with a shell and a Water-supply pipe disposed centrally therein, of a plurality of verticallyarranged series of pans extending longitudinally of the shell and pipe and on opposite sides of the pipe, that is, a plurality of series on each side of the pipe, a plurality of watertroughs located above the pans a pipe longitudinally thereof and independently connected to the pipe by branch pipes, said troughs being adapted to deliver the Water from their oppositesides downwardly to the pans on each side of the central pipe.
