Description

J. MYERS. Sleigh-Brake.
No. 67,132. Patented July 23, 1 867.
gutter! giant gaunt @ffifl JOSEPH MYERS, 0r CAMDEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 67,132, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGH-BRAKES TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MYERS, of Camden, in. the county of Luzerne, and in the State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Sleigh-Brakes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. I
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a sleigh or sled of any ordinary construction, Upon one of the raves is secured a metallic plate, K, to which is hinged a lever, B. Connected to the lever B is a connecting-rod, G, the rear end of which connects to the upper end of a lever, E. The lever is secured to a shaft or rod, J, which lies; across the rear of the sleigh, beneath the raves, being held in suitable hearings L L. The shaft or rod J is provided near each end with ears P P, to which one end of a bar, F, is pivoted. The other ends of the bars F are pivoted to a lever, G, one end of said lever being hinged to the rear knee, near its lower end. H H represent two connecting-bars, which connect the levers G G to the levers I I. The levers I are forked at both ends, one end embracing and being pivoted to the rear end of the sleighrunner, while the extreme ends of the forks of the other end are turned down, so as to form spurs to catch into the snowor'ice,,to operate as a brake for the sleigh. By throwing the lever B forward or backward, the levers I I, with their spurs, are raised or lowered. I a
It will readily be perceived that, by means of the system of levers and connecting-bars herein described, the brake-levers I I may he applied for brakeing thesleigh with very little power, and thatvery great power may be applied whennecessary, with very little exertion onthe part of the operator.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arrangement of the lever B, connecting-rod C, with vthe levers E, Gr, and L shaft J, and connectingbars H and F, upon the sleigh or sled, as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim'the foregoing, I havehereunto set my hand and seal this 15th day of April, 1867.
