FRANK TEELIN AND JACOB-A. SWIFT, OF BLOSSVALE, NEW YORK. 1mm Patent'Na. 69,724, dated October 8, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGH-BRAKE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we; FRANK-TEELINand JACOB A. SWIFT, of Blossvale, Oneida county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Sleigh or Sled-Brake, for the purpose of checking the speed of sleighs or sleds, and relieving teams in going down hill, while drawing heavy loads in winter; and we do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the .letters of reference being marked thereon.
The nature ofour invention consists of two iron rods A A that run the length of the'sleigh on the outside of the knees.
These rods AA, at the point B, areso split or divided as to embrace the runners, and at their extremity connected with cross-bar M, so that in forward or backward motion of the tongue T, guided by the pins Z Z, they operate the lovers S. When pressing backwards, the points of the levers w are pressed downwards through the shoe of 'the runners, as'represented in red lines, andmust materially check the forward movement of the sleigh, when passing down hill. 0 is a catch or fastener that is let down into the notch t .on the upper end of lever S, so
that the lever will not operate in booking, or when the brake is not needed; the whole arrangement being simple in itsconstruction, strong, and not liable to get out of order.
It will readily be seen that this brake, unlike all others, not only secures its object, but in its application to any ordinary sled actually strengthens the same.
i O'Zaz'm.
What we claim as our invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
The direct action of the tongue T upon the levers S, by means of rods A A, arranged and applied as represented and described.
FRANK TEELIN, JACOB A. SWIFT.
