Description

@uiten tats-s .gaten-t @fitter GEORGE HUBERT; 0E LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA. Leners Parent No. 67,116, zaad July 2e, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GOMPOUND LOCK POR DOORSl TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HUBERT, of Lancaster, inthe countyof Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Improvement on Common Door-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accoinpanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe inside of a lock, with my improvementin place.
Figure 2, the lid or cover of the saine.`
Figure 3, the inner lower corner of the box of the lock, I, II, III, IV, detached portions shown separately and combined. l
The nature of my invention consists in providing an ordinary door-lock with an additional lock and key, for double-locking the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describeits construction and operation.
The axedplate forming the open box, a portion of which is shown by g. 3, has aslotin the lower corner marked c, and two square lugs, g z, and a round pin, m. The piece 1I shows a slot between the arms G G and a slot below H. In said slotsthe guide-lugs g 7L are also shown. K is a shaft aiixed, the foot of which extendsv beyond the slotted plate and slides in the slot 7c, shown in fig. 3, andY the upper portion in the slot k, in the cover, fig. 2, which also sho'ws a separate key-hole, R, into which the extra or. smaller key is inserted, which vreaches the curve J', and pushes the piece or plate II upwards and downwardsfrom or against the shoulder in the lock-bolt c, (iig. Over the-"piece II there is a tumbler, I, with a curved flange, L, and a tubular socket, M, which sets over the pin m, (iig. The raised rear has a spiral spring acting against the side of the case. The shaft K enters and has its motion between the curved flange L and the rear plate. Both combined are shown by iig. 2. IV shows the catch I) resting on the ordinary bolt c, with a shouldered hook and lower curved prolongationid, against which the common key acts to raise it out of the notch for locking or unlocking, as 'the bolt slides forward orbackward from notch 1 to notch 2, or vz'ce versa, a strong spring, E, resting on the catch D, as shown. -But as. there is no special novelty in the remaining portions of the lock no further description is required, as my improvement relates touthe arrangement of the extra locking attachment described.
The operation is simple: When the door is locked in the ordinary manner the smaller key is introduced, and the bolt is again locked, so thatit cannot be unlocked nor picked without first unlocking the lock-bolt itself.
I am aware that there are numerous improvements on locks, embracing a great diversity in their arrangement and combinations. I am also aware that it is not new to lock the main bolt of a door-lock by means of an additional safety-holt and key. It-lierefore only claim such under the particular arrangement and construction of parts herein described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The supplementary lock, consisting of the bolt II, with its projecting arm K, and the spring-tumbler I,
` withl its curved flange and opening, the same being constructed` and arranged as described, so as to be operated by an independent key for securing the main holt of the lock, in theimanner substantially as set forth.
his GEORGE X HUBERT.
mark.
