Description

uiten faire stmt ffice. t i l IMPROVEMENT In SPINDLE-STEP.
titte ,Stimuli refsrreh tt in tigen sttms @anni ant mntingpurt tf the time.'
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNY: y Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. STERRY, of Canton, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented al new and improved Spindle-Step; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will-enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompenying drawings forming part of this specification. v
The object; of my invention is to provide a. reversible spindle-step, which may be used in connection with en oil-cup for a'. much longer period than those nowin nse, and it consists in uniting either end of the spindle` step to the oil-cup bye. screw-joint. i I y The'drawng represents the oilcupattached to the spindle-step by my improved method, and, to a section of spinning-frame I l A represents themil of a. spinning-frame, and the spindle-step, which is adjustably secured therein by means ofthe set-screw D. Upon each end of this step @screw-thread is out. C is the oil-cup, having through the bottom a. hole provided with afemnle screw which screws upon either end of the stepB. E is a spindle, 4represented in the drawing for the purpose of better illustrating my invention. When one end of the step becomes worn out by the action of the spindle E, the oil-cup is unscrewed, the step reversed, and the oil-cup screwed upon the opposite end. Thus it will be seen that the step is made to last twice as long as those in ordinary use.l The upper end of the step B extends up into the cup aJ shortdistance, leaving a. recess around it, as seen at a. A suicient'qusntityof oil is poured into the cup, which finds vits wuyto the bottom, but when the spindle is put in motion the centrifugal force throws it from the centre and step against the sides of the cup, the interior of which represents nearly an inverted cone diminishing in diameter at the top, so that but a, small-spnce l, is left around the spindle. fFrom the sides of the cup the oil is constantlyv running down towards'the bottom of the spindle to be again thrown off and'against the sides of the cup. In this, way a'circulation is kept up, the inclined sides of thecup favoring it, butin the course of this circulation the sediment contained in the oil willl lodge in the recess a, from whence itris easily removed. When the spindle is stopped the oil obeys the laws of gravity, and falls back and surrounds the bottom of the spindle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new,A and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cup C constructed as described, in combination with the screw-threaded reversible spindle-step B, als. herein set forth for thepurpose specified. I l
i The above specication of mypinvention signed by me this 21st day of November, 1866.l
FRANCIS A. STERRY.
