Description

o. R. TOMPKINS. STEP FOR UPRIGHT SHAFTS.
No. 64,724. Patented May 14, 1867.
@Meer I [Z22/azr- @uiten tstt -v stmt @frn i CHARLES R. ToMRKINs or' ROCHESTER, NRW YORK. Letters .Patent No. 64,724,I dated Magi 14, 18.67.
IMPROVEMENT 1N STEPS FOR UPRIGHT sums.
'ro ALL wHOM 1T MAYCONOERN; l
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. TOMPKINS, of the city of Roch-ester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York', have invented a. new und useful Improvement in Constructing Steps for Upright Shafts; and I do' hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, .end exact description of the construction and operation of the same, referencebeiug had to th'e ennexed' drawings, making'a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is un outside view. Figure. 2, inside view; and Figure 3 is :i top View with the cover oli'. l I Thenature of my. invention consistsin making the outside shell a of the step (figs. 1 :md 2)A of iron, or any other suituble metal, of any convenient size. The shell a-is bored out to receive the inside sleeve b, as shown in figs. 2 und 3, .andhereaftervto be described. The shells:l is also provided with u.'l cover, z', of sume material,
and `closely-irttedto the shell-e sind shsft-jlbut-canessily--be 'removed .for thepurpose of jilling the stepwith clean oil. The sleeve b, in which the shaft f,revolves, nia-y be meile of brass, or other suitablemetal, and is provided with more or less suitable:projectionst e e e e, and closely fitted in the shell a, so es tp leave open spaces,
c u cc, :is shown in figs. 2 :ind 3, for the purpose of l'allowing the oil to pass down between the outside shell a v :rnd the inside sleeve b. When the upright shaft runs at a high speed, the oil is carried up between the shaft und sleeve Z1 until it comes to the top of the sleeve b, when itis released .and flows back to the oil-chamber d d below through the open spaces e c c c,'when it again comes in .contact with the shaft f, and continues to do so fis long :is the shaft is in motion, thus securingaJ great saving in oil. The o'pen space d d, b elow sleeve. b, in fig. 2,4is to allow whatever sediment the oil muy contain to settle'therein, while the end of the4 shaft constnntly runs in clean Oil. The shaft f is supported by a, steel screw, g, :md revolves upon it. All the sediment canfeusily be removed before filling the step with clean oil bytuking out the steel screw g. There is connected with the screw g a. knot, h, ivith al leather pecking, for the purpose of tightening thesteel screw g.
What I claim as my invention, und desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The inside sleeve b, with its projections, and the oil-ehnmber d,A in connection with steel screw g, substantially as described..
