UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE,
BENJAMIN J. KARRER, OF PORT HURON, MICHIGAN.
BRO ILING OR TOASTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 670,025, dated March 19, 19 01.
Application filed January 3 1901. Serial No. 41,970. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. KARRER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broiling or Toasting Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an improved broiling or toasting device.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production and by means of which articles of food may be broiled or toasted over a gas-flame without subjecting them to the injurious and deleterious action of the gas and which shall be of such con-' struction as to readily permit of the separation of the guard-plate from the open-work wire frame for the purpose of cleaning.
With these and other minor objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved broiling or toasting device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of thesame.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the open-work wire frame of the broiling or toasting device which embodies in its construction the end pieces 2 and 3 and the handle 4;. This frame may be of any well-known or approved construction or shape and in itself forms no part of the present invention. 5 denotes a shield, which consists of a plate of sheet metal, which is connected to the openwork wire frame in such a manner as to shield and prevent articles of food supported by the open-work wire frame from coming in contact with the flames or absorbing the gases or products of combustion. This shield is attached to the frame removably, preferably by forming the shield at one end with an upwardly and inwardly bent flange 6, which takes over the end piece 2, and providing it with a spring-catch 7, which takes over the end piece 3. To disengage the shield from the wire-Work frame, all that is necessary is to press the spring-catch inwardly to disengage it from its end-piece and then unhook the other end of the shield from the end piece 2 of the frame.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of my improved broiling or toasting device will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a broiling or toasting device, the combination, with an open-work wire frame comprising in its construction a handle and end pieces, of an imperforate plate or shield having at one end an upwardly and inwardly bent end to engage with one of the end pieces and having at its opposite end a spring-catch to engage the other end piece, substantially as set forth.
. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN J. KARRER.
