To LZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ENOS F. SCHLIGHTER, a citizen of theUnited States,residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Silos, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in silos; and it consists in providing means whereby a silo will be completely full after the material thereof settles.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.

Figs. 5 and 6 represent vertical sectional views showing slight changes in the construction.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the top of the silo-tank, the same consisting of the rim B, which may be in some cases the upper edge of the sides of the silo. Suitably hinged thereto are the sections C of the top, it being noticed that the hinges D are placed close together and that the edges E of the sections are curved in order to permit proper Secured to the edges of said sections in any suitable mannerare the flexible sections F,which when the tops are closed, as in Fig. l, are folded and allow proper closing, a suitable strip G being attached to one side of each of the section Cin order to overlap the next adjacent section when the parts are in a closed position in order to form a tight joint. H designates an upright suitably supported, to which is attached the bracket J having the eyes K, and which latter are adapted to receive hooks L, secured to said sections, each of said sections being further provided with an eye M or a hook N, it being seen by this construction that the sections arelocked in raised position and away from the upright H. P designates a bar movably supported on said upright I-I, having the handle Q and carrying the cap R, which is adapted to lock a section in closed position. S designates a door in one of said sections.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the same construction, excepting that the hooks L are provided with loops T, which are adapted to run on bars U, secured to the sections in order to permit proper movement, a spring V being so arranged as to lock the hooks in their upper position.
In Fig. 6 I haveshown a construction Wherein a runner W is employed having the pivoted rods A' secured thereto, the opposite end being secured to the sections C, and having the rods B or other suitable means for operating said runner, the locking-holt C being provided.
The operation is as follows: In all silo-tanks now in use when the material is first placed therein the material completely lls the silo; but in a short time it sinks and shrinks, so that there is a considerable portion of the silo which is empty and which necessitates a return to lill the same or else a shortage. In order to overcome this, I have arranged to have the top or lid of the silo formed in sections, which can be elevated or raised, as seen in Figs. 2, 5, and 6, it being seen that when the said sections are raised they act in the same manner as the sides of the silo, so that the material can be placed in the silo and filled to almost the top of the said sections, which prevent the material from escaping and said sections acting as an extension or a practical continuation of said silo. After the material has remained therein for a short time and sinks the sections can be let down and locked in position and the silo will be full. Before starting filling I open the top and lock the section by means of the hooks L and M in position and then fill in the material. After the material has sunk I release the hooks and the parts fall back into position, after which the cap K is pulled down and locks the same. The operation of the modifications is the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a silo, a top formed in sections which latter are so connected With said silo that they IOC can be raised or elevated to form a continuation of the sides of the silo.
2. In a silo, a top formed in sections which latter are so connected with said silo that they can be raised or elevated to permit material to till to substantially the top of said sections which latter prevent the escape of said material.
3. In a silo, a top formed in sections, means for permitting the same to be raised or elevated, whereby the capacity of said silo is increased, and means for locking said sections in elevated position.
4. In a silo, a top formed in sections and ieXible sections suitably connected with the nist-mentioned sections.
5. In a silo, a top formed in sections and an upright suitably supported against which the ends of the sections are adapted to rest when in closed position. y
6. In a silo, a top formed in sections, an upright against which the ends of the sections are adapted to rest and a cap guided on said upright and adapted to lock the sections in closed position.
7. In a silo, a top formed of sections, means for permitting the same to be raised and means for locking said sections with respect to each other when in raised position.
S. In a silo, a top formed in sections, means for permitting 'the same to be raised, whereby the capacity of the tank is increased, means for locking said sections in elevated position, and means for locking said sections When in closed position.
