.NITED I. STATES *ATENT rricE EMIL LOUIS FRANK, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
BOOKBINDERS TYPE-PALLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,629, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed December 10 1900. Serial No. 39,324. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL LOUIS FRANK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bookbinders Type-Pallets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the instrument called the type-pallet and used by bookbinders for holding and manipulating the heated movable type used for impressing the gilt letters and ornaments on the backs of books; and the invention consists in the parts and devices and combinations of de- Vices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of the improved type-pallet. Fig. 2 is Fig. 3 is an end view; Fig. 4:, a vertical section on the line 44 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A is the handle of the tool,
' made, preferably, of wood or other non-conducting material, so that the heat of the type will not be conveyed to the workmans hand. Upon this handle is mounted the right-angled framework, consisting of the base B and the upright back B. The movable type C in composing are placed upon this framework, the lower ends resting upon the base B and their sides resting against the upright back 13, preferably in contact therewith, so as to more readily receive the heat, and which is applied by flame or otherwise to the part B when the tool is to be used.
Extending laterally from the frame B'B, at the ends thereof, are the interrupted screws D D, the interrupted portion d d of the screws forming a continuation of the type holding surface of the frame B B, so that the place for containing the type is thereby extended into said screws. Resting in this angular space are the angular clamping pieces or jaws E E, which slide along in the space. The outer edges of these clamping-jaws E E are made in the form of an arc and grooved, as at 6, with a groove corresponding in diameter to the diameter of the screws D D.
F F are two ring-nuts, preferably made with milled periphery to be readily turned by hand. These nuts engage in the threads of the screws D D and move in the grooves e of the clamping-jaws, so that when the nuts are operated the clamping-jaws are caused to move along with the nuts. The wall at one side of the groove of each clamping-jaw is cut away, as at m, to enable the insertion of the jaws in the nuts.
In operating, the type being set in the typespace and against the back for any length of line desired, along with such leads or fillingpieces as may be required, the two nuts are screwed up until the clamping-jaws at each side come against the type and secure them firmly against moving. Neither jaw being fixed, but both being movable, the line of type may be easily centered over the handle, which centering is a thing to be desired in the use of the tool.
It will be noted that there are no small parts about this tool, that the screw itself is a large strong one, and that the jaws may be caused to come against the type with considerable force, so that the latter are held strongly, and this without great difficulty.
The tool gives great satisfaction and is not expensive to make. parts of brass, as this receives and holds the heat better; but of course the tool may be made of other material and some of the merits of my invention retained.
I claim- 1. The type-pallet provided with a screw having an angular cavity to receive the type, and a clamping device mounted on the screw, substantially as specified.
2. The type-pallet having a screw provided with an angular cavity and forming an extension of the type-holding frame, and means mounted on said screw for clamping the type, substantially as specified.
3. The type-pallet comprising screws with angular cavities to receive the type, and provided with nuts for clamping the type, substantially as specified.
l. The typepallet provided with screws having cavities for receiving the type, a handle midway between the screws, two nuts, one at each end, and two clamping-jaws carried by the nuts, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the screws made with the right-angled slots throughout their length, the type-frame and its handle, the clamping- I prefer to make all the jaws moving in the screw-slots, and the two said frame, and the clamping-jaws and nuts nuts engagingthe threads of the screws and mounted on the screws, substantially as specimoving in slots in the clamping-jaws, subfied. stantially as specified.
6. The type-pallet consisting of the type- Witnesses: holding frame, the handle, the interrupted TIMOTHY J. FITZ GERALD, screws forming type-holding extensions of T. E. RANDOLPH; I
EMIL LOUIS FRANK.
