.TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WASHINGTON C. EVARTS, of Danby, Tompkins county, New York, have invented an Improved Plough and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the annexed drawings and the letters thereon.
My object is to make a plough with hinged or winged mould-boards, and fit it for various uses. This I accomplish in the form I prefer, by making a double point which penetrates the earth and throws it partially up and to each side, when the mould-boards receive it, and either spread it evenly or move it at intervals on each side of the furrows. The spreading evenly is done by setting the hinged mould-boards so as to clear a camwheel soon to be named. The moving the earth at intervals is done by a wheel just back of the mid-rib of the cast-iron beam. This wheel is roughened so as to make adhesion to the ground, and has cams on its sides, which at intervals throw the hinged mould-boards, and with them the earth, outwards. spring or lips on the cams retract them. By this means a. vibratory action is had at times and in w'ays'such as are desirable for various uses. Changing the wheels gives various cams for various purposes, and changing the mould-boards gives various sizes and forms for various uses. These and other facts are apparent in the drawings, which are- Figure 1, a side view of my plough.

In fig. 1, A A are the handles; B the beam, which also makes the frame of the plough, and by the midrib part of it, the path for the wheel D; and O is the point; E are the-hinged mould-boards, and D the camwheel that moves the mould-boards. Infig. 2 the same letters refer to the same parts. At H is a set-bolt in a slot in the frame-piece F, which is hinged at G. With the fixfed position of the mould-boards the plough is a simple cultivator, as of corn, for example, or a double wide-furrow plough with suitable mould-boards, a-horse-hoc, and a surface drag. With the wheel in action it hills corn, potatoes, and other articles, and with a riddle or other mould-board, throws out potatoes in digging them, as well as has other acts and uses. The other uses and parts of my plough are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
Claim.
1. I claim making a plough with the hinged mould-boards E E, cam-wheel D attached .to tho mid-rib or beam-frame, or other convenient part, and actuating the same as and for the purposes described.
2. I claim making the cam-wheel D adjustable by means of the hinged and slotted pieces F F, for the purposes described.
3. I claim hanging the mould-boards on a separate and adjustable frame R R, for the purpose of using thereby various-sized and shaped mould-boards for various uses, as described.
4. I claim lap. hinging the various mould-boards so far back of the plough point as entirely to conceal the hinges and protect them from the earth as it slides over the joint, as described.
5. I claim extending the mid-rib of the beam-frame B to near the wheel D, and so shaping the same in combination with the wheel as to make an 'even and smooth path for the wheel D, for the purpose of giving an even; steady motion to the cam-wheel, as described.
6. I claim the combined whole, when virtually made and operated as described, for the purposes of double wide-furrow plough, cultivator, and digger, as set forth.
