MIKE POLIOH, OF RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR TREATING DISEASES OF THE EAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent N 0. 668,929, dated February 26, 1901.
Application filed May 9, 1900. Serial No. 16.053. N0 modeL) To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MIKE POLIOH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented a new and improved Device for Treating Diseases of the Ear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient means of treating diseases of the ear, to which end the invention comprises a sheet of fabric capable of being rolled into tubular form, the fabric bearing certain medicaments, so that when the fabric is ignited and consumed or partly consumed the medicaments will be applied to the diseased parts and a cure thereof offected.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the use of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the sheet of fabric in its flat state, and Fig. 3 is a view showing the sheet rolled.
The sheet a of fabric should be combustible and should be treated with certain medicaments for the cure of various diseases of the car. If desired, opposite corners of the square sheet a may be cut away, as indicated at a, so that when the sheet is rolled into the form shown in Fig. 3 the ends of the tube thus produced will be given the form shown, which best adapts it to the use for which it is intended.
In using the device it is rolled into the tubular or conical form shown and ignited at the lower end, the upper or small end being projected into the ear and the head of the patient being slightly inclined, as shown in Fig. 1. By lighting the lower end of the tube upon the combustion of the tube the medicated gases resulting therefrom will pass upward through the tube into the ear to treat it. When the device is ignited, it should be permitted to burn for about three-fourths of its lengththat is to say, the tube should be burned until there is danger of injuring the patient by the fire.
The device will act equally well whether applied as shown in Fig. l or applied to the ear with the small end down, the smoke and gases passing through the small end in whatever position the tube is held.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As a new article of manufacture, a device for treating diseases of the ear, consisting of a conical tube open at both ends and formed of a sheet of combustible and medicated fabric rolled into form, said tube being adapted to be ignited at its large end and to have its small end inserted in the car, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a device for treating diseases of the ear, consisting of a conical tube open at both ends and formed of a sheet of combustible and medicated fabric rolled into form with its several layers disconnected, whereby the tube will readily burn when ignited at its large end and its small end inserted in the ear, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a device for treating diseases of the ear, consisting of a conical tube open at both ends and formed of an approximately square sheet having two of its diagonally opposite corners cut away, as shown, and rolled into form, said sheet being of combustible and medicated fabric, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MIKE POLIOH.
