TO'ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, JOSEPHUS WV. MAXFILD, of Potsdam, in the county of St. Lawrence, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Combination Instrument for Lasting and Crimping Boots and Shoes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof reference being had to thrx 7 accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In said drawings- Figure I is a perspective view of the instrument as it appears attached to and combined with a pair of shoemakers pincers. v
Figures 2 and 3 are like views of the said instrument detached from the pncers.
Figures 4 and 5 are like views of said instrument without the knife d and the awl e.
Figures 6 and 7 are views of the knife d detached from the clamps a, showing the tongue m.
Figures 8 and 9 are like views of the awl e detached from the clamps a.
To a. pair of shoemakers pincers I attach the clamp a, by means of the socket I) and the thumb-screw c, or their equivalent. The clamp a is so constructed as to receive/thc knife a7 and the awl e, and are held firmly in their places by the screw z', the tongue on, and groove n, or their equivalent. Or n. pivot may be used, passing through the clamp a and the knife d. I
For the purpose of using the combination instrument, grasp the pinccrs by the handle; brin;r down the leather in the same manner employed by workmen in crimping boots and slices; make a hole with the awl e; drive the peg or brad with the pincers, and cut the pla-its or folds in the leather with the knife d.
The object and end attained by my combination instrument is, first, no other instrument is required in lasting and crimping boots and shoes; second, the workman, during the operation, is not required or obliged to exchange his tools, as required by the ordinary process.
I claim the arrangement of knife d and awl c with clamp a, attached to the lower part of pinccrs, for the;
purpose specified. y A
JOSEPI-IUS W. MAXFIELD.
