UNTTED STATES PATENT ERICE.
JOSEPH D. NoRRIS, SR., on NEAR DEWEY, INDIANA.
RECEPTACLE FOR CHEWlNG-GUIVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,561, dated February 5, 1901.
Application 'lled April 13, 1900.
To al?. 'Lu/tom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. NoRRIS, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing near Dewey, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Chewing-Gum, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles for holding chewing-gum after it has been masticated, the object being to provide a safe, clean, and convenient repository wherein the gum during the periods of nonuse may have its iiavor and aromatic qualities restored and a great economy effected on account of the almost indefinite prolongation of the period of usefulness of said gum.
To this end the invention consists, primarily, in a close-fitting case or box of convenient size and shape to be carried in the pocket or worn suspended from a ladys belt as an ornament, said box having va lining of wax or other suitable material highly impregnated with iiavoring and aromatic ingredients.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention in the form of a pocket-case, Figure I is a perspective view of the closed case; Fig. 2, a perspective view of same opened, showing the lining and a piece of chewing-gum in Said case; and Fig. 3 is a section on the dotted line 3 3 of Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrows.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
A represents the case, which will be in two parts, preferably hinged together and locked by a Spring-clasp, as shown; but it is not essential that the two parts be hinged, as the two parts may go together with a sliding t or be screwed together, each and all of said means being well known and old; but the essential feature of my invention is that a suitable case or box be provided with a lining B, which is thoroughly impregnated with a pleasant tasting and smelling material, which will be freely imparted to the atmosphere within the case and any article placed therein and coming in contact with the lining. In carrying out my invention this lining will preferably be a gum not too soft in its nature, such Serial No. 12,764. (No model.)
as beeswax or a mixture of paraflin and beeswax,to which an aromatic and lavoring agent, like oil of peppermint or oil of wintergreen, has been copiously added. This may be pressed into the two parts'of the case or added while in a plastic condition with a brush or applied in any other suitable and convenient manner.
The piece of chewing-gum to be restored is represented at g in the drawings.
It will be noted that the box can -be readily relined when it is desired to renew it or to change the scent and flavor, and it should be borne in mind that my invention is not limited to any particular kind of aromatic and flavoring agent, but that many kinds may be used to suit the tastes of the users.
I am aware that pocket-cases have been provided to receive chewing-gum; but these were si mply receptacles which did not impart any scent or flavor to the gum. I am also aware that .boxes for tobacco and other goods to be used in a slightly-moistened condition have been provided with lids lined with an absorbent pad soaked with water, and I do not claim such constructions broadly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. As a new article of manufacture, a box or case as a receptacle for chewed gum havingA a lining of wax or gum impregnated with a volatile oil to be imparted to chewed gum placed within the case to impart a pleasant fragrance and taste thereto, substantially as shown and specified.
2. In a receptacle for chewed gum, a case in two tight-fitting parts which can be readily separated to admit the gum, said case having a lining composed of wax or gum to which has been added a fragrant volatile oil as the oil of wintergreen, peppermint, or the like, as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indiana, this 4th day of April, A. D. 1900.
