Be it known that we, HARRY A. DEITERS and EDWARD L. BILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Spencer, in the county of Roane and State of WVest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Snap'I-Iook, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to snap-hooks, and has for its object to provide an improved connection therefor, so that when connected to a strap or other object the hook may be capable of movement in a great number of directions to facilitate the engagement and disengagement of the hook with another object.
With this and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangemcntof parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings,and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a snap-hook constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the snap-hook proper, having the rear end of its shank bent into an eye 2. A leaf-spring 3 has its rear end fixed between the extremity of the eye and the adjacent side of the shank, and the opposite free extremity of the spring bears against the inner side of the extremity of the bill of the snap-hook. A suitable metallic band 4: embraces the rear extremity of the shank and the body portion thereof to prevent the eye from being pulled out of place and also embraces the adjacent end of the spring to prevent lateral displacement thereof.
Loosely engaging the eye 2 is an eyebolt or link 5, the outer end of which passes loosely through a fiat transverse plate 6 and is bent or upset, as at 7, to form a swiveled connec'-- tion between the link and the plate.
A substantially U-shaped clip or clevis 8 is located outwardly beyond the plate '6 and has its opposite sides or arms passed inwardly through the plate and at opposite sides of the link 5, the extremities of the arms being bent or upset against the inner face of the plate or bar, as indicated at 9. By this means the clevis is swiveled to the snap-hook, so that the latter may have a movement independently of the strap or other object which may be connected to the clevis. Moreover, the parts of the device are compactly assembled and. firmly connected to form a strong and durable snap-hook.
It will be understood that the arms of the clevis or clip pass loosely through perforations formed in the transverse bar 6, so that the clevis may be moved transversely of the bar toward and away from the snap-hook to facilitate the application and removal of the same. The bar is provided with an intermediate perforation to slidably receive the link 5, so that the entire clevis may be moved toward and away from the hook, the movement thereof being limited by the enlarged ends of the link. Also the loose connection between the link and the snap-hook proper forms a hinged or pivotal connection therefor, so that the hook and the clevis may be angularly related for any desired purpose.
