To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES G. CONN and WILLIAM V. PEzzoNI, citizens of the United States, and residents of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Organs, of which the following is a specification.

The subject of our invention is an organ in 1o which the entire action, bellows, and pedal mechanism of eective size and construction may be folded and inclosed within a case of small dimensions when not in use, so that it may be conveniently carried by hand. To

this end we construct the entire action or keyboard and its accessories in two independent parts, each with its own bellows mechanism, hinged together in a supportingcasein such manner that the two parts of the 2o keyboard maybe folded down in vertical position within the open sides of the case,which are then closed by doors. When the parts of the keyboard are elevated into horizontal position for use, the open doors being nearly in line with the back of the case, to which they are hinged, form supports for the parts of the keyboard in their horizontal position. The case is further constructed with a folding base, hinged to the lower rear corner of the 3o body of the case in such a manner that when the instrument is to be used the said base being turned down supports the case at the necessary height, and when not in use the said base is folded up upon and about the case.

The pedals are mounted in the folding base and do not interfere with its folding capacity. The folding of the hinged keyboard within the case and the folding of the supportingbase upon the lower part of the case bring 4o the entire structure Within convenient dimensions for carrying in hand when not in use.

In order that our invention may be fully understood in its construction and details, we will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front View of the instrument open for use. Fig. 2 is aside View of the same. Fig. 3 is a central transverse section.

The front l and back 2 of the case are united by a center board 3 and bya rod or bolt 4, on which latter the two parts 5 6 of the keyboard are hinged through the medium of projecting brackets 7, so that when the parts of the keyboard are turned up into the horizontal position represented in Fig. 1 the said keyboard will project above the case in convenient position for playing, and when folded down in 6o vertical position will be entirely within the case, as shown in Fig. 5, room being also afforded for the bellows mechanism in its folded condition. 8 S are doors hinged to the back of the case, serving to close the sides 55 thereof when the action is folded within the Same, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and when open serving to support the action in horizontal position for use, as shown in Figs. 1 f and 2. 7o

Separate bellows mechanisms are mount-ed on the bottom of each section 5 and 6 Aof the keyboard, each consisting of a reservoir-bellows 9, mounted directly on the bottom board of the action-section and connected with the reed-cham loer thereof by the usual valve port or aperture,and a pumping-bellows 10,1nounted on the bottom board of the reservoir-bellows 9 and connected with the interior thereof by the valved openings 10a. As the con- 8o struction of the reeds, reed-chambers, and their accessories are well understood by those skilled in the art and no peculiarities therein are involved in our invention, the details of these parts are not represented or described. The bellows may of course be arranged either for suction or blast, both being common. In practice we use, as here represented, a vacuum reservoir bellows 9, with a spring 1l, (shown in dotted lines,) tending to open it, 9o and an exhaust pumping-bellows lO, having a spring 12, (shown in dotted lines,) tending to close it. The bottom board of the exhaust pumping-bellows 10 is hinged, as shown, on that of the reservoir-bellows and is connected by a pull-strap 18 with the free end of an operating-pedal 14., which is hinged to the bottom l5 of a hinged supporting-base, formed with two sides 16 16 and a back 17 and an open front to admit the feet of the performer in operating the pedals.

The reservoir and pumping bellows and the operating-pedal are duplicated for the two sections 5 and 6 of the keyboard, and the above description thereof applies to each. In Fig. 1 we have shown the bellows mechanism of the right-hand section 6 open as in operation, and in dotted lines that ofthe left-hand section 5 closed in readiness for the folding of the hinged keyboard into the case. The reservoir-bellows 9 is retained in this folded condition by a hook 1S, fastening its bottom board closely against that of the action or keyboard section. The pumping-bellows 10 closes automatically by the effect of its spring and is so retained when not drawn down by its pedal. lVhen the bellows are folded as shown in dotted lines at the left-hand side of Fig. 1, the action or keyboard sections may be turned down in vertical position completely within the case, (see Fig. 5,) the projecting hinge-brackets 7 affording room for the closed bellows between the opposed bottoms of the action or keyboard sections. The case is then closed by the side doors 8 and a hinged top 19 of common form. Lastly, the baseframe 15 16 17, the sides 16 of which are sufficiently wide apart to embrace and inclose the body ofthe case and connected thereto at their rear upper corners by pivots 20, is turned up into the position shown in Figs. 4e and 5 and secured by hooks 21 or other suitable fastenings. ln thus turning up the hinged base into its closed position the pedalstraps 13 are relaxed and the hinged pedals 1t themselves drop against the bottom of the hinged base and lie flat between this and the front 1 ofthe ease. Spring-catches or fastenings of anycommon and suitable form may be employed to support the case upon the base 16 17 in the elevated position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.

Air-holes suitably located, as at 26 or otherwise, may connect thev reservoirs of the two sections of the action and enable either or both bellows systems to operate in common on the entire action in customary manner, or such air connections` being closed or omitted the bellows systems may operate on the sections independently, as irst described.

Having thus described our invention, the following is what we claim as new therein and desire to obtain by Letters Patent:

1. The combination of the front 1 and back 2 forming a case with open sides, the folding action made in two parts 5, 6 and the hingebrackets 7 and pivot 4 by which the parts 5,

G are hinged to each other and to the ease, so as to fold into the open sides of the case when not in use, as described.

2. In a portable organ the combination of an action divided into two parts swinging on -a iixed axis, a case by which said action is supported when in operating position and inclosed when in folded position, and doors which serve to support the action in operation substantially as described.

3. The combination of the case 1, 2, having open sides, the action members 5, 6 jointed together and to the case by projecting hinge-brackets 7 and pivot L1, the reservoirbellows 9, hinged to the bottom of the respective action members 5, G within the recesses formed by the projecting hinge-brackets 7 thereof and the pumping-bellows 10 hinged to the bottom board oi` the reservoir-bellows 9, substantially as shown and described.

5. The combination of the case l, 2 and 3 having open sides, the doors 3 closing said sides, the folding action 5, G, adapted to be inclosed within said case, and the coveringtop 19, substantially as described.

6. The combination of the folding acl- ion 5, 6, the ease 1, 2, 3 inclosing said action when folded and the hinged base 15, 10, 17 forming an elevating-support for the instrument when open and folding upon the case in smaller compass when closed, as explained.

7. The combination of the folding action 5, G, suitable bellows 9, 10 containing case 1, 2, 3, foldingbase l5, 1G, 17 and operating-pedals 1-1 within said base, substantially as described.
