ADVERTISING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,188, dated January 15, 1901.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, AROHIBALD A. DU 1301s, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Advertising Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a novel and attractive advertising device (or toy) including in its construction movable figures or objects and actuating mechanism therefor, the latter being especially, though not exclusively, designed for connection with a movable door, to the end that various predetermined motions or actions shall be imparted to such figures or objects by the act of opening and shutting the door, and attention thus directed to the device and to the advertisement or display therein or adjacent thereto.

Thein vention as generally stated comprises a card or base, a series of movable figures or objects thereon, a spring-controlled drum, spool, or take-up upon which is wound a cord, and motion-transmitting devices for said figures or objects engaged by said cord and adapted to be actuated thereby, all as will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

A represents a base of cardboard or the like, upon the face of which is printed or disposed any suitable figure or design provided with movable parts. In the present instance the design includes the representation of a woman having appropriately-mounted movable head and arms sections 1) b", respectively. On the back of the base is mounted a take-up device 0, comprising a spool or roller 0, formed on or affixed to a shaft 0, which has its bearings in suitably-located lugs 0 Enoircling the shaft is a torsional spring 0 which is secured at its ends to one of the lugs and to the end of the spool or roller. Upon this spool or roller is secured and wound a cord 0 the free portion of which is passed around a series of peripherally-grooved sheaves or wheels D on the back of the base and connected with a movable door E or the like, whereby during the opening and shutting of the door the cord will be unwound from and rewound on the spring-controlled spool or roller, and thus effect the positive rotation back and forth of the wheels D. In the present instance two wheels are indicated. They are mounted on studs d,carried bya block 01 on the back of the base. Adjacent to these wheels are bosses f, in which are fulcrumed levers F, preferably of wire. These levers extend freely through the base and carry on their outer ends the respective movable sections of the figure. The longer arms of the levers lie adjacent to the respective Wheels and are provided with loops f, through which extend crank-pinsf on the wheels to the end that during the rotation of the latter the said levers will be oscillated in a manner to actuate the movable sections to which they are connected. The cord is preferably drawn over an antifriction roller or guide 9 on the back of the base.

It will be obvious that the number and arrangement of wheels employed are immaterial, as the same will be governed by the number and position of the parts to be actuated,and,further, that the details of construction of the device may be changed in various respects without departing from my invention.

I claim The combination with a base orsupport having upon its face a figure or design provided with movable parts, of a spring-controlled roller mounted on the back of said base or support, a series of freely-rotatable wheels mountedat intervals apart adjacent to said roller, a cord passed around opposite peripheral portions of said wheels in succession and wound upon the said roller, and levers extending through said base or support and fixedly connected at their outer portions with the respective movable parts and provided on their inner portions with loops having crank connections with said wheels, whereby when the free portion of the cord is drawn outward and thereby unwound from, or released and permitted to be rewound on, the roller, the series of wheels will be simultaneously rotated and the said movable parts be thereby concertedly actuated, substantially as described.
