Be it known that I, LEONIDAS D. WEST, of Dundee, in the county of Yates, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Producing Combustion, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to apparatus for producing combustion, the object being to increase the eificiency of the heater and at the same time to decrease the cost of maintaining a uniform and high degree of heat within the combustion-chamber.
To this end the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the component parts of an apparatus forthe purpose mentioned, as hereinafter fully described,and
. pointed out in the claims.
In describing this in vention reference is had to the accom panyingdrawings, forminga part of this specification, in which like figures indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a heater embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged sectional views taken, respectively, on lines 2 2and 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4, Fig. 3. i
1 represents a heater, as a stove, which is of any desired form or size and is provided with a combustion-chamber, asmoke-conduit 3, and an inlet-opening 4:, arranged beneath a suitable grate 5 at the base of the combustion-chamber 2.
The smokecondnit 3 may be connected to the combustion chamber 2 in any desired manner, and is provided with a damper 6 for controlling the passage of the escaping prodnets of combustion therethrough and with an opening '7 extending through one of its side walls between the damper 6 and the combustion-chamber 2. Arranged within the smoke-conduit 3 is an air-conduit 8, having one end registered with the opening 7 and communicating with an air-inlet chamber 9, said inlet-chamber being secured to the outer face of the smoke-conduit 3 and provided with one or more apertures 10, communicating with the atmosphere or other supporter ofcombustion. The opposite end of the air-conduit 8 extends within the oomliustion-chamber2 and is connected to an air-drum 11, extendinginto the combustion -chamber and having apertures 12, also communicating with the atmosphere.
Suitable closures l3 and 14 are movable into and out of registration with the apertures 10 and 12 for regulating the quantity of air admitted to the conduit 8. It is thus apparent that the opposite ends of conduit 8 communicate with the atmosphere when desired and that the air may be admitted through the apertures of one end of the conduit 8 independently of the other by closing one of the closures and opening the other closure.
15 represents a branch conduit arranged within the combustion-chamber and having one end connected to the intermediate portion of the conduit 8, between the inlet-apertures l0 and 12. The opposite end of the branch 15 extends laterally in a substantial curved horizontal plane and is provided with a downward-deflected extension 16, having lateral openings 17, arranged in close proximity to the surface of the fuel within the combustion-chamber 2.
A sui I able damper 18 is arranged within the conduit 8 between the drum ll and the adjacent end of the branch conduit 15 and serves to close the lower end of the conduit 8 when air is admitted to the opposite end of said conduit.
19 is an air-duct forming a portion of one of the Walls of the combustion-chamber and having one end connected to the drum 11 and its opposite end communicating with the atmosphere, preferably at a point beneath the inlet-opening 4 of the heater 1. The duct 19 is provided With a damper 20for controlling the passage of air therethrough and may be used in connection with or independently of the plosures l3 and 14 for controlling the supply of air to the conduit 8.
The operation of my invention is similar to that set forth in my pending process application, Serial No. 13,424, which is based upon utilized to cause a continuous fiow of fresh air to the combustionchamber, which is heated in transit thereto for producinga maximum degree of heat with the least possible amount of fuel.
Iii-the operation of my invention when the fuel is ignited the inlet-opening 4 is closed and the escaping products produce an inequality of pressure in the combustion-chamher. One of the closures, as the closure 13,
is then opened and a quantity of air proportionate to the inequality of pressure is drawn into the conduit 8 and branch 15 through the opening 17 and into the combustion-chamber 2. 2. An apparatus for producing combustion comprising a combustion chamber and a smoke-conduit having an air-inlet opening extending through one of its side walls, a damperarranged above said opening, a'drum having one end projecting into the combustion-chamber and its other end provided with an opening communicating with the atmosphere, closures for said openings in the drum and smoke-conduit, an air-conduit connecting said drum with the opening in the smokeconduit, and an additional conduit connected to the air-conduit between the drum and the opening in the smoke-conduit and discharging into the combustion-chamber.
3. An apparatus for producing combustion comprising a combustion chamber and a smoke-conduit having an opening in one of its side walls, an air-drum having an opening communicating with the atmosphere, an
