Letters Patent No. 66,572, dated July 9, 1867. i I
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. DUGDALE, of Penn Township, in the county of Jay, in the State of Indiana,
have invented a new and improved Mode of Supporting and Elevating Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in furnishing a new and improved mode of supporting and elevating gates, by the device of combining andapplyin g to gate-posts and to gates certain attachments, for the use and purpose, firstly, of counteracting the effects of the weight and leverage of gates upon gate-posts, so as to prevent the said gate-posts from sagging, in consequence of the aforesaid weight and leverage of gates, when they are, attached to and bearing in draught upon the said posts; and for the use and purpose, secondly, of elevating .gates above snow, ice, or other obstruction.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I construct my gate proper in 'any of the known forms usually adopted for the construction of swinginggates, and I establish my gate-posts by planting them firmly in the ground in the usual manner.
In addition to the head gate-post, marked 1, reference being bad to the drawing, and the foot gate-post 2,- at any suitable distance in the rear of these said posts, 1 and 2, I establish another post, 3, and I apply a brace, B, so that it extends from the upper part of post 3 to the foot of post 2, the said brace being let into the posts so as to form a sufficient hold. I also connect posts 2 and 3 at top by a tie, T, fastening it securely and firmly to the said posts. Next, at any suitable distance from post 2, and in a direction suitable for counteracting the side draught of the gate, when it is opening, I establish another post, 4, andI apply to posts 2 and4 a brace, 13, and a tie, T, in a manner substantially the same as that hereinbefore described of connecting posts 2 and 3. Next, in posts 2 and 3 I form suitable niches or side mortises, and into these I place horizontally, and one above the other, two connecting and elevating arms, A A, and over the said mortises or niches m m m m, in posts 2 and 3, I fasten facing-boards F F. To the ends of the arms A A, at post 2, I attach my gate G'thus, using hinges therefor of any suitable form: I surround the hinge irons and shouldered plate irons, with the ends of the arms on which they are placed, with iron bands; and I use also iron bolts with screws and taps. The bolts passing through the irons and wood of the arms are screwed and fastened securely to the arms aforesaid. The arms A A, in and through the aforesaid mortises, extend back any suitable distance beyond post 3, and I secure them at and' to post 3, thus: By an iron bolt, that passes crosswise through the upper arm A, at the back of post 3, the said bolt being movable. The lower arm A I fasten by applying thereto movable iron bolts that pass crosswise through the said arm-one at the front and the other at the back of the said post 8. I also use movable iron bolts, that pass through the facing-boards and into the posts, for the purpose of holding the arms in any position requisite. I connect the arms A A, near post 2, by a stay, S. I regulate the hearing or hanging of the gate by moving the arms back or forth in the mortises as may be required. I applyalso another arm, X, that connects with the upper arm A at post 2, and, extending back through a mortise, m, in post 4, is secured by an iron bolt passing crosswise in the said arm, at the back of the said post 4:. The use of the arm X is for holding the upper arm A in its proper position when the gate is opening, and thus prevent any strain upon the facing-board F, at post 2. My object in combining and applying to the posts 2, 3, and 4, and to the gate G, the attachment of braces B B and ties T T with the arm A A and X, in the manner herein described, is for the use and purpose, firstly, of causing the draught of the gate to be upon the posts 3 and 4, and the said posts being firmly braced and tied in the manner herein described, are thereby efl'ectually prevented from sagging, in consequence of the weight and leverage of the gate upon them; and secondly, the arms A A and X, being readily moved at either end upward or downward in the aforesaid mortises, are intended for the use and purpose of elevating gates above snow, ice, or other obstruction. 'I use, therefore, lever L applied as shown at posts 2 and 4. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The furnishing of a new and improved mode of supporting and elevating gates, by the device of combining and applyingto gate-posts the attachments of braces, tics, and arms, and also of combining and applying the aforesaid attachments to gates, in the manner and for the uses substantially as herein set forth and described.
WILLIAM R. DUGDALE.
