Quinn gtstcs gstmt @ffirz.
JOHN BURT, OF WESTPORT, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 66,559, dated July 9, 1867.
GRAIN-DRYER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN BURT, of Westport, in the county of Bristol, in the Stateof Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Portable Grain-Dryer and Saver; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon. p
My invention consists in a cylinder with beads and periphery perforated or provided with slats, and lined with wire gauze, in which to dry, save, and store the grain; a friction-roll upon which the cylinder rests, and by means of which it is revolved.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of my invention.
A is the cylinder; B B B B is the frame, in which\the cylinder is supported 0, roll on which the cylinder rests, and by which it is revolved; D, door in the periphery-of the cylinder, through which'the grain can be put in or talien out; E E, pawls to prevent roll 0 from turning, when so'desired; F, lever with which to turn roll C, and thereby revolve the cylinder; G G G, trucks by which the whole machine may be moved.
Operation.
This portable grain-dryer and saver being constructed of convenient dimensions, and as herein set forth and described, the grain to be dried or saved placed in the cylinder its novelty, utility, and operation may be noted. By revolving thefcylinder, the grain is changed from one position to another, and the air passing through the openings in the slat-work and wiregauzqevnriorates the moisture, and improves the quality of the 'grain. If corn not shellcdbe placed in this dryer the wire gauze. may be removed, portions of husks and silkwill then be screened by revolving the cylinder, and there will be no material of which mice. can construct their nests, besides which the motion would render it impossible for them to stay.
I do not confine my invention to drying the grain; it may be screened and protected by it asherein set forth. Neither do Iconfine to slat-work, lined with wire gauze; the apertures for admitting the air and screening the grain may be formed either with or withoutthe wire gauze, in any practical manner; neither do I claim or desire to claim'any device previously invented or. patented for drying and saving grain, but what I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A grain-dryer and saver, constructed and operating as herein set forth for the purpose-specified.
JOHN BURT.
