Description

GGGGG B.
'cation ooooooooo f NTED STATES JACOB GUMP, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
GARTER.
SPECIFICATION forming1 part of Letters Patent No. 665,430, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed March 21, 1900. Serial No. 9,485. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB GUMP, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a garter intended for use by men to support short hose, and has for its object a form of garter of a single piece of elastic webbing which will encircle the leg just above the calf with any desired degree of tension and has a pendent portion to which the hose-grip device is attached.
In the drawings, Figure l represents the garter in the position which it will occupy when in use. Fig. 2 represents the plate by which the webbing is folded and turned from a horizontal to a vertical position.
Referring to Fig. 2, the plate l is made preferably with two parallel sides and two sides which converge toward one another and is provided with four slots 2, 3, 4, and 5. The slot 2 is parallel and adjacent to the longer of the two parallel sides and is provided at each end with a circular enlargement 6 6. The slot 5 on the opposite end of the plate and adjacent to the other parallel side is merely a keeper for a hook 7 attached to the free end of the garter. The slots 3 and 4. are adjacent to the other two sides of the plate, but converge toward one another at a somewhat greater angle than the sides of the plate. They are each also provided at their ends with circular enlargements 6 6, like slot 2.
8 is the web of which the garter is formed, which is passed through the slot 2 behind the plate and forward through the slot 3, then across the plate and backward through the slot 4. These slots are so located in relation to one another that they will turn the web practically a right angle. They are each enlarged, preferably at both ends, and this enlargement is an essential element of my invention.
Most elastic webbing is made with a somewhat thicker edge than the central portion, and it is essential, therefore, if the web is to be saved from being cut by the ends of the slots, that those ends should be enlarged. As tension is applied to the web it will be drawn into the converging ends of the slots 2 and 3, respectively, and would jam in those ends and be torn when pulled through the slots for adjustment or by the usual strain on the web when in use. This is avoided by enlarging the ends of the slots, so as to provide accommodation for the thicker edge as well as the forcing of the web into the converging ends of the slots.
7 is a hook secured to the end of the web 8, and 9 is a slide for the adjustment of the length of the garter. 10 is a hose-grip secured to the end of the pendent portion of the web.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a garter, the combination of a plate provided with a series of slots, the ends of which are enlarged, and a web threaded through said slots.
2. In a garter the combination of a plate provided with three slots forming together a triangle, said slots being enlarged at their converging ends, in combination with a web threaded through said slots, substantially as described.
Signed by me at Baltimore, Maryland, this 17th day of March, 1900.
JACOB GUMP.
