To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST MLITZ, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at No. 3 Letochstrasse, Kattowitz, in the Einpire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Steam-Engine Lubricators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to lubricators for steam-engines or like machinery, the object being to provide an improved lubricator for such machinery which by virtue of its construction and location will reduce the consumption of lubricating material to a minimum and most thoroughly lubricate all moving parts.
With this object in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,which illustrate several forms in which the invention may be embodied, Figure l is a front view, a longitudinal section, an end elevation, and a cross-section of a lubricatorstem having an opening in one side near its discharge end. Fig. 2 indicates by the same views a lubricator-stem with spoon-shaped end. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate by the same views modified forms of stems. trate examples of the application of my'invention in a steam-engine.
The lubricator attachment comprises a hollow double screw-stem a, with the screw-nut 1) formed integral with the same and positioned between its ends. The canal, spoon, or other shaped receptacle 0 forms an open bowl which is in connection with the oil-supply pipe. The oil is continually supplied to the apparatus by an oil-pump fixed on and operated by the engine or by other means, by which the quantity of oil supplied to the apparatus is regulated according to the consumption of oil. The stem is fastened, by
means of its threads, in the cylinder, slidevalve box, or the like parts, which contain steam and movable parts, in such a manner that its canal, spoon, or other shaped parts Figs. 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, and 9 illusreach into the steam pipes or boxes, where by the oil is in continual contact or connection with the steam. The lubricator-stem must be of course applied at a proper place in the steam-conduit in advance of the machinery or moving parts which are to be oiled, so that the oil reaches these parts with the steam. The oil supplied to the spoon of the apparatus is thereby brought into the highest degree of fluidity by the temperature, and there is also opportunity afforded for the most intensive dispersion of the oil in the passing steam. By this molecular mixing of the oil with the steam of the engine the best utilization of its lubricating effect is effected, and therefore the supply of oil can be reduced in the same measure as the utilization of its lubricatin g qualities is increased2'. e. the consumption of oil is brought to a minimum. A miscarrying of the oil into the slide-valve box or similar machinery parts is made impossible by the present invention.
The lubricator-stem is arranged according tothe construction and direction of passage of steam, as shown by the different forms of embodiment illustrated by Figs. 1 and 4. Fig. 1 is a lubricator-stem having a canal open on the upper side at its outer end. Fig. 2 is a lubricator-stem having a spoon-shaped receptacle. Fig. 3 is a lubricator-stem having a canal, the upper part of which is partly open. Fig. 4 is a lubricator-stem having a canal which has a slit-like opening on one or both sides. These different forms of embodiment are applied as follows: The form shown in Fig. 1 is used for pipe conduits or boxes with downwardly-passing steam, (as evident by the examples of Figs. 5 to 7,) wherein the opening of the canal is turned toward the incoming steam. Fig. 2 is used in the same manner, the mouth of the spoon c facing the steam. The form of Fig. 3 at o as applied in the examples shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is used for pipe conduits or boxes, to which the steam enters in horizontal direction, whereat the closed part of the canal serves as a temporary receptacle for the oil, the stem standing vertically, as shown, with its opening facing the incoming steam. The form shown in Fig. 4 at c is used for pipe conduits or boxes,into which the steam enters in an upward direction, as evident from the examples shown in Figs. 5

The corner of the under part of the canal-opening is accordingly made round, so that, as obvious from Fig. 7, direction of the arrow A, the steam when passing by the canal enters through the slit-like opening into the canal and forces out the oil which is in the space formed by the under part of the canal.
An important advantage of this apparatus is that a consumption of oil only takes place during the operation of the engine. The entering of largerquantities of oil into the boxes which are to be oiled, according to the arrangement of the movable machinery parts, as may happen with grease-cocks or similar lubricators, is prevented by this apparatus, and the settling of oil on parts which absolutely need no oiling is hereby prevented.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In lubricators for steam-engines or like machinery, a hollow lubricator-stem adapted to be mounted in steam pipes or conduits, provided with a receptacle to retain oil and having an opening in the side of the stem opposed to the path of the incoming steam in said conduits, substantially as described.
2. In lubricators for steam-engines or like machinery, a hollow lubricator-stei'n adapted to be mounted in steam pipes or conduits provided with a receptacle to retain oil having an opening in the side of the stem opposed to the incoming steam in said conduits, and means for securing the stem in position, comprisinga double thread and nut, substantially as described.
3. In lubricators for steam-engines or like machinery, a hollow lubricator-stem adapted to be mounted in steam pipes or conduits provided with a receptacle to retain oil, and an opening in the side of the stem'opposed to the passage of steam through said conduits, one wall of which opening lies in a plane'tangential to the periphery of the main bore ofthe stem, substantially as described.
