SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,356, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed May 16, 1900.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEROME I. WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propellers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a rear end view. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a section as on line 00, Fig. 2, through one of the propellerblades.
The object of this invention is to provide a propeller for boats designed to secure the maximum of propulsive efficiency and minimum of dimensions and required motive power, with other advantages hereinafter mentioned.
The invention consists in the peculiar form and construction of the propeller hereinafter particularly described and pointed out.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, 1 denotes the blades of the propeller, preferably three in number, as in the present instance.

The outer or rear edge 1 of each blade extends substantially in a semicircle from the hub, and the forward or inner edge l extends in a straight line from the forward end of the hub obliquely to the free or outer extremity of the semicircular edge 1 or point of the blade. The prolongation of the line l will pass substantially through the center of the axis of the hub, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the inward extension of the semicircular portion 1 excludes the major axis of the hub, and consequently the shaft 4. The rear face 5 of each blade (within the lines 1 1 and the base-line 1, or line of junction with the hub) is made concave and the front 45 face 6 correspondingly convex, the wall of the blade being of suitable thickness for sufficient strength. substantially that of half of a diagonal sec tion of a scalene cone, one side of which is substantially at right angles to the base of the cone. It is preferred to have a greater thickness of that part of the blades contiguous to the hub, as shown.
The line of junction 1 of the blade with the hub is substantially parallel with the latter.
Having thus described the construction of my invention, I shall now describe the operation thereof, as follows: In propelling the boat forward the propeller is driven in the di rection of the arrows in Fig. 1. The rear concave side or face 5 of each blade, so to say, scoops all the water in its path, which having no other ready outlet flows freely off from the semicircular edge 1 in a direction opposite to that in which the boat is being propelled, while the displaced water to the front of the blade glides over the back of said edge. When the direction of motion of the propeller is reversed in order to drive the boat backward, the front side or face 6 of the blade forces the water forward, and it flows freely oli' from the straight edge 1 in a direction opposite to that of the movement of the boat and the displaced water flows over the said edge 1*.
Some of the advantages of my improved. propeller are as follows: It does not churn the water, it has no appreciable slip, it throws the displaced'water in a line directly opposite to the movement of the boat, it does not race at the start but takes instant hold, and does not throw the water sidewise or splash.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A propeller comprising a central hub and a series of blades fixed thereto, the form of each blade being substantially that of half of a diagonal section of ascalene cone, one side of which is at right angles to the base, the semicircular rear or outer edge of the blade being in a plane at right angles to the major axis of the hub, and the inward extension of said semicircular edge of the blade excluding In testimony whereof l have hereunto afsaid axis, the line of junction of the blade fixed mysignature this 14th dayof May, AD. with the hub being substantially parallel 1900.
