NITED STAT S MORIZ BAUER, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
VAGINAL IRRIGATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 665,304, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed August 16, 1900. berial No. 27,067. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORIZ BAUER, physician, a citizen of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, residing at Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Irrigators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for introducing cleansing or medicinal liquids into the vagina, and has for its object the construction of a vaginal irrigator or syringe consisting of a tubular body of glass, metal, ebonite, or other suitable material having a cross-section similar to that of a vaginal speculum. The end which is to be introduced into the vagina is rounded off and provided with one or more apertures, while the other end carries a rubber ball which communicates either directly with the interior of the tubular body or with a smaller tube inserted therein.
In the annexed drawings an apparatus of this kind is shown, of which-- Figure 1 represents the same in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a front end view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a modified apparatus in longitudinal section, and Fig. 4is a cross-section of this apparatus.
In all figures similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
a, is the tubular body, rounded off at one end and provided with one or more apertures It. At its other end the body ahas a tubular extension 0 for attaching the elastic rubber ball b.
When the apparatus is to be employed, the liquid to be used is drawn into the body a in the customary manner by compressing the rubber ball b, inserting the body a into the liquid, and then permitting the ball b to expand again. The body a being filled is introduced into the vagina, whereupon the liquid is driven out by compressing the ball 19.
When the ball is permitted to expand again, the suction exerted thereby, assisted by the contraction of the vagina, will collect the liquid back into the body on of the apparatus. In this operation the running out of the liquid at the sides of the body a is prevented by the naturaltension of the sphincter muscle and of the vagina contracting closely around the body a. The modified apparatus shown in Figs. 3 and 4 essentially consists of the same parts as that just described, only the rubber ball is here not in communication with the body on itself, but with a tube d, inserted therein. This tube d projects through an opening 9 in the forward end of the body a and is there by preference provided with a protecting and retaining flange h. This apparatus is used in the same manner as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2; but in this case the,
liquid is drawn up through the tube (1 into i the ball I) and also passes out through the tube d when the ball is compressed. The hollow space of the body a in this case serves to receive the used liquid which passes from the vagina through the aperture or apertures it; into the body a. In either case the apparatus permits the irrigation of the vagina without spilling any of the liquid.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A vaginal irrigator or syringe consisting of a tubular body adapted to fit into the vagina having its inner end rounded and provided with an opening in its center and with apertures eccentrically located in said end, a smaller tube projected through the central opening into and through the tubular body, projecting beyond the rounded end, a compressible bulb secured on the inner tube inside the outer end of the tubular body, anda
