SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 665,243, dated January 1, 1901.
. Application filed October 80,1899. Serial No. 735,339. il\l0 modem To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLFO LURIA, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Medical Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a bed specially constructed and adapted for use of medical or surgical patients in hospitals. The construction, arrangement, and combination of parts areas hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bed. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the bed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bed p oper, portions being removed or broken away.
The bedstead or bed-frame A supports a cooling-tank B,adapted for containing ice and water and provided with a pipe which extends downward. This tank is supported directly over or above and parallel to the bed proper or mattress H. Its function or use is to regulate the temperature of pyretic or febrile patientsas, for instance, in spinal meningitis, pneumonia, typhoid fever, and all forms of eruptive diseases, where bodily temperature plays such an important role. In some of these diseases-notably in spinal meningitis and typhoid-it may be required to apply heat to the spinal column and neck of the patient to produce relaxation of the muscular system while the general temperature is reduced by the general application of cold or cool air. In such cases the combined use of the cooling apparatus B and the heating apparatus about to be described is indicated.
The mattress H is adapted to be inflated with hot water or air, and in order that hot water may be utilized when required the mattress is provided with a pipe j, Fig. l, which extends to a heater J of suitable construction. Said heater is arranged at any required proximity to the bed. An inflatable pillow H is also employed. The mattress H lies directly upon wooden cross bars or slats 19, whose ends rest in turn upon the edges of a metal tank K. The latter is rectangular in form and adapted to contain water. The water may be heated by means of the pipe-coil 20, upon which the tank rests. The said coil is suitably connected with the water-heater J by means of pipes 21, that provide for circulation of Water through the several convolutions of the coil.
The coil 20 is normally supported upon the bed-frame, but may be adjusted higher or lower by means of a table L, which is arranged directly beneath it and has adjustable sections that adapt it for separate or independent use as a surgical table. The means for supporting said table is a central vertical screw 29, that works in a socket formed in a pedestal 30. The screw is provided with a bevel-gear 31, which meshes with another 32, fixed on a horizontal shaft or rod 33, having a hand-wheel 34. By rotating the latter the screw 29 will be rotated in pedestal 30, and thus elevate or lower the table L, and thereby also the entire bedthat is to say, the mattress H and the parts supporting it. Thus a patient may be raised into greater proximity to the cooling-tank B as his febrile condition or comfort may require. It will be understood that the air cooled by contact With said tank descends and comes in contact with the patient, while heat may be applied at the same time to the back and neck for producing a certain ameliorating effect, as before stated.
It is apparent that a certain degree of heat may be communicated to the mattress H from the coil 20 through the tank K; but for practical purposes it is necessary to fill the mattress with hot water or air.
When it is desired to bathe the patient bodily, the mattress H and slats 19 are removed and he is immersed in warm water in the tank K.
Receptacles F F for water or antiseptic fluids may be supported adjustably at the foot of the bed upon a screw-post 13. Flexi ble tubes 11 depend from said receptacles. Receptacles G G for anesthetics may be ad j ustably supported at the head of the bed upon a bent screw-threaded arm or rod 17. Apparatus O and D for supporting afractured arm and legs are shown supported at the head and foot, respectively, of the bed. A weight 9 is connected by a cord with the leg-supporting apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a cooling-tank, a mattress adapted to hold air or water, and I5 supports therefor, and means for raising and lowering said mattress of a pipe connected with the mattress and a heater to which said pipe attaches, as shown and described.
Signed by me at Chicago, Illinois, this 25th 20 day of October, 1899.
ADOLFO LURIA.
