This invention relates to a new or improved method of operating the shuttle employed in looms for weaving and apparatus for effecting the same; and it consists in means for throwing the shuttle through the shed by electricity, thereby dispensing with the old or present system of operating the same by means of pickers operated from each end of the loom by picking-sticks, thereb v dispensing with the noise caused by picking motions, at the same time rendering it impossible for the shuttle to ily out from the loom, thus minimizing the risk from accident to the weaver so prevalent hitherto.

A designates the loom sides or frames; B, a crank-shaft; O, a cam or tumbler shaft; D, a slayg E, slay-swords; F, a reed; G, a driving-pulley; H, a loose pulley, and Z the metallic shuttle.
Under the slay D is disposed the electro slay D may be provided with a slot or slots tok insure of the efficiency-of the magnet or magnets I operating on the shuttle'Z. The sliding frame or sliding yoke K is moved or traveled in both directions by means of the wire or cord M, which passes over and under the pulleys ct to the scroll O, mounted on the shaft or center N, located in the xings P, secured to any convenient part of the framework of the loom or to the floor. On the shaft or center N is mounted the differential cam R, which is actuated in both directions by the bands or cords S, which pass over the guidepulleys T to the treadle-levers U, operated alternately by the cams W from the cam or tumbler shaft C. As the cams W actuate their respective levers by the rotating action of the cam or tumbler shaft O, the differential cam R rotates theshaft or center N and the scroll O,by which action the wire or cord M is moved, so as to travel the sliding frame or sliding yoke K, with the brushes Y and electro magnet or magnets I, across the width of the loom in both directions, according to 4 the operations of the cams W with the treadlelevers U. The brushes Y are mounted on the sliding frame or sliding yoke K and disposed so as to slide in contact with the upper and lower plates b, as shown` in Figs. l and 4, the said plates b being mounted on the wood or other suitable bar f, carried by the brackets J Electricity is supplied from a dynamo through the electric wire c to the terminal d,
mounted on the plates b, located on the wood or other suitable barf, from whence it passes through to the terminal e on the said plate b and through the wire g to the switch X, mounted on the breastbeam V of the loom, the switch X being coupled to the dynamo by the electric wire`h, thus completing the circuit, by `which action the shuttle Z is operated through the shed. The whole of the parts are insulated where necessary and protected in any convenient manner, as desired or required.
The electric wires c, g, and h are of sucha lengthas to allow of the oscillating movements of the slay D.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is- IOO 1. In a loom, the combination with a metallic shuttle, of a magnet for actuating the same, a cord or Wire for moving said magnet back and forth across the loom, a drum or scroll on which said cord is Wound, a differential cani on the shaft on which said scroll is mounted, a guide-pulley, treadle-levers, cords passing around said guide-pulley and in opposite directions around said cam and having their ends attached respectively to said treadle-levers and to said cam, a carnshai't and cams thereon adapted to engage said levers for alternately rotating said scroll in opposite directions, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a loom, the combination with the slay D and a metallic shuttle Z, above the same, of a sliding frame or yoke K, having contact-brushes Y thereon, an electro magnet or magnets I carried by the frame K and located beneath said slay D, electric contactplates b insulated from each otherand adapted to be engaged respectively by said brushes Y, an electric circuit including a switch X,
essaies the plates b, the brushes Y and the magnets I, a scroll O, a cord or Wire M connected at its opposite ends to said frame K and Wound upon said scroll, a shaftN on which said scroll is mounted, a diierential cam R on said shaft, a guidelpulley T, treadle-levers U, cords S passing around said guide-pulley, wound in opposite directions on said cam, and connected at their ends respectively with said treadlelevers and with said cam, a cam-shaft C and cams W on the shaft C adapted to engage said treadle-levers for actuating the same alternately, and thereby rotating said scroll O alternately in opposite directions, as and for the purpose set forth.
