WAX MATCH.
SPEGIFIOATIOR'forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,997, dated J 81218.17 1, 1901.
'- Application filed January 13,1898. sol-n1 Ho. 6326.021. on model.)
' certain new and useful Improvements in the Mannfacture'of Wax Matches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and'to letters of reference marked thereon, which'form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wax matches, and more particularly to the preparation of wooden cores or splints for the 'same, and to provide the same with certain new and usefullfeatures, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Wax matches as heretofore made, having a core of yarn or fibrous material, have been found defective in that they are too flexible, especially when anywise warm, and also require a large proportion of wax or fatty matter; also the cotton or other fibrous core does not burn freely and also gives off an objectionable odor. f
Wax matches made with a round smooth core of wood coated with suitable wax are objectionable in that the wax does not sumcientiy penetrate the fibers of the woodand is liable to become loosened therefrom and also the wood burns too slowly and'the wax is o to melt near the burning end andd'rop nstoad of burning as it should. Thus v" e furnishing a core of suflicient stability and stiffness the wood core for wax matches, as heretofore made, fails of being satisfactory.
I have found that it is necessary in order to hold the melted wax and prevent its running back or dropping off the match that the core should be very open or porous, like a In the case of cores made of yarn a used. These tend by capillary attraction to hold a large amount of melted wax in the space between thestrands'i The object of my i'nv r is to so prepabm these wood cores is was will penetrate them more freely and adhere more closely thereto, so that said sary strength and stiffness to the core, a way of so doing being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a sheet of veneer after it has been treated by cutting-rolls, as hereinafter specified; and Fig. 2, a match splint or core made fromv the same.
The breaking up and loosening or'creasing various ways. I do not claim to be limited in this respect.
tween rolls having sharp cutting-ridges and preferably treating the veneer with these outting-ridges diagonally to, the grain in opposite directions, as shown ata 0., whereby the outer surface fibers ofv the veneer are cut and broken and .materially'loosened and made more absorbent and more readily consumed when lighted' These veneers are then cut into short strips of suitable size to form cores B for wax matches and will then have a rough and broken-apart surface b b and a compressed and unbroken interior. This broken and rough surface will now readily absorb the wax coating and form a surface of such porosity and roughness that the wax will firmly adhere thereto when cold, and when ignited the separated particles of wood will burn more rapidly and fully and also retain the melted wax adjacent to the flame and prevent itsrunning babk on the match oryarn, they require less wax, provide more burning material, furnish cores of suflicient stiffness without depending on the wax for the same, and do not give off any oifens'ive odor when burning.
A preferred way of so doing consists in passing sheets of veneerA beof the fibers may be done mechanically in I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, l ened and separated, a coating ofwax 'on said what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters core, and penetrating the same, and an ignit- Patent, is V ing'eompound on'the same, substantially as 1.. The described wood core for wax matches, described.
