  • This invention has reference to improved means for securing the ends and regulating the tension of ropes; and it more especially relates to rigging-screws for use in connection with wire-rigged ships. It is not, however, limited to this application, but may advantageously be employed in other circumstances in which wire or other rope has to be paratus.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,466, dated December 25, 1900.

To a. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HUGH SPROTT CLEM- ENT, residing at 141 West George street, and ALLAN STEWART THoMsoN, residing at 41 New Wynd, Trongate, in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, subjects of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, have invented a new and useful Rigging-Screw, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improved means for securing the ends and regulating the tension of ropes; and it more especially relates to rigging-screws for use in connection with wire-rigged ships. It is not, however, limited to this application, but may advantageously be employed in other circumstances in which wire or other rope has to be paratus.

This invention has for its objects, first, to construct apparatus which shall serve both as a clamp to securely grip the end of a rope and as a means for regulating the tension of the same; second, to obviate the necessity for splicing the ends of a rope into a bight or loop encircling a portion of the apparatus, as has hitherto been usual; third, to enable the tension of the rope to be adjusted by means of a single screw instead of by the right and left handed screw, which has heretofore usually formed part of apparatus for this purpose, and, fourth, to so construct and arrange the apparatus that the said screw shall be normally inclosed within and protected by a nut while the rope is in tension, the necessity for the covering of canvas usually employed to protect the screw when exposed being thereby obviated. For the attainment of these objects we employ a single-threaded screw-bolt furnished with a rotatable nut adapted to engage a clamping device which grips the end of the rope, the connection between the nut and clamp being such that the former, notwithstanding such connection, may be freely turned to regulate the tension of the rope.
Apparatus in accordance with our invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the ap- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the same in a plane at right angles to Fig.

. An elongated nut l, cylindrical in general I outlinefbutiffav 'rnga square or polygonal central portion 2, is furnished at one end with a circular flange 3. In the nut 1 works a screwbolt 4, having at one end a ring or eye 5, by means of which it is secured to any suitable point of attachment by means of a staple, shackle, hook, or the like, and a longitudinally-split tapered sleeve, consisting of two portions 6 and 7, has its larger end 8 formed to embrace the collar 3, which turns freely therein. This split sleeve is embraced by another conical sleeve 9, adapted to be moved lengthwise thereon by means of a nut 10, which coacts with a split screw 11, formed on the extremities of the portions 6 and 7 of the split sleeve and acts against the enlarged or flanged end of the outer sleeve 9. The halfsleeve 7 is furnished with a pair of projections 12, which engage corresponding recesses 13 on the half-sleeve 6, these projections and recesses causing the two portions 6 and 7 of the sleeve and of the screw 11 to assume a correct position with respect to each other. The end 14 of the rope 15 to be secured is enlarged by doubling, plaiting, or otherwise,
and this end of the rope is clamped within the portions 6 and 7 of the split sleeve by the outer sleeve 9 being forced thereon under the action of the nut 10, which is preferably reinforced by a lock-nut 16.
The operation of this device is as follows: The screw 4 being secured to the point of attachment by its eye 5 and the nut l screwed thereupon, the two halves 6 and 7 of the split clamping-sleeve are placed in position, engaging the collar 3 and embracing the enlarged end 14 of the rope. The outer sleeve 9 and nut 10 are then passed over the other end of the rope 15, and this sleeve 9 being placed over the split sleeve and forced thereupon by the nut 10 and the screw 11 the wedge-like action of the coned or tapered parts 6, 7, and 9 allows very considerable pressure to be applied by the said nut and screw, forcing together the two portions of the clamping-sleeve and firmly securing the enlarged end of the rope within this sleeve. The free end of the rope 15 being secured to the mast or other desired point of attachment, the
length and tension of the same may be regulated by turning the nut 1 by means of a wrench or spanner engaging its non-circular portion 2, its collar 3 meanwhile turning freely within the portion 8 of the inner sleeve.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. Apparatus for regulating the tension of a rope and securely gripping one end thereof, comprising a screw bolt; a rotatable nut thereon, a clamping deviceadapted to engage said nut and to permit of its rotation, and to firmly grip the end of the rope to be secured as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
2. Apparatus for regulating the tension of a rope and securely clamping one end of the same, comprising a screw-bolt; an elongated nut .coacting therewith provided with a non-' circular part by which it may be turned, and with a circular flange; a tapered and split clamping-sleeve embracing the enlarged end of the rope to be secured, and having its larger end formed to engage the ,flange on the elongated nut, and its smaller end screwed to receive a nut preferably reinforced with a lock-nut; and an outer coned or tapered sleeve adapted to be forced upon the tapered portion thereof as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
3. A rigging-screw comprising in combination a screw-bolt an elongated rotatable nut coacting therewith provided with a non-circular part and with a circular flange, a tapered and split sleeve engaging the said flange, adapted to embrace the end of the rope to be secured, having at one end a screwed portion whereon is a nut and an outer tapered sleeve adapted to be forced by said nut onto the inner sleeve; asand for-the'purposes herein before described.
