FOOT-PUM P FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,286, dated December 18, 1900-.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WALTER H. PERKINS, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Foot-Pumps for Bicycles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and-which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent,

My invention relates to animprovement in foot-pumps for bicycles, the object being to produce a simple, compact, and effective device constructed with particular reference to exceptional convenience in use.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a foot-pump having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown I provide the pump at its lower end with a yielding arm A, the inner end of which is rigidly secured in place between the stirrup or foot B of the pump and the base C, which receives the lower end of the cylinder or barrel D of the pump. As shown, the arm A is located in the same plane as the stirrup; but, if preferred, it may be arranged at a right angle thereto or at any other angle thereto. At its outer end the said yielding arm A is provided with a sheet-metal cup E, containing a thick rubber washer E, held in place by nurling the edge of the cup, as at e, and by a flange f, formed by upsetting the inner end of the corrugated nipple F, mounted in the end of the arm for the reception of the outer end of the short tube G, the inner end of which is applied to a corresponding corrugated nipple H, mounted in an inclined position in the bottom of the base C, as shown in Fig. 3. The thick rubber washer E is trav- 6o ersed by a flaring opening and constitutes the real valve connection, or, in other words,
the means relied upon for establishing an airtight passage for the transfer of compressed air from the pump to the valve of the pneumatic tireof a wheel. It will be understood that the air compressed in the cylinder D is forced into the nipple H,-thence through the tube G into the nipple F, and thence through the rubber washer E into the valve of a pneu- 7o matic tire, while an air-tight joint is formed between the tire and the washer by the ten sion of the arm A, which is sprung upward when the washer is placed upon the valve and the pump held down upon the ground by its stirrup. The yielding arm A is thus seen to perform the function of supporting the tube G and of securing the tension required to temporarily form an air-tight connection between the valve of the tire and the outer end of the said tube G, which constitutes a flexible or yielding tubular connection between the tire and the cylinder of the pump. The nipple H may be threaded and screwed into the base C, or it may be soldered therein, as desired. It may be located in an inclined or any other position in the base, or it may be arranged to emerge from the side of the cylinder. 7
If preferred, the cup E and rubber washer E may be discarded and their place taken by a beveled nipple F, formed upon the inner end of the corrugated nipple F, as shown in Fig. 6, the idea being that the beveled nipple will enter the valve and make an air-tight 5 joint therewith through the crowding action of the yielding arm A. In this modified construction the beveled nipple constitutes the immediate valve connection.
When a rubber washer like the washer E I00 is used, it may be held in place by arms I, struck downward from the outer end of the yielding arm I, as shown in Fig. 4.
As herein shown, the stirrup B is formed from a single piece of sheet metal, its ends being brought together and receiving two rivets B B, which secure the base C to them; but the base may be secured to the stirrup by soldering or in some other manner, if preferred. These rivets also secure in place the inner end of the yielding arm A, which, as before stated, is interposed between the base and the stirrup. The said base, which is preferably struck up from sheet metal, is provided upon its lower edge with an outwardlyextendin g hollow flange 0, receiving the outer edge of a leather washer J, which is pinched in the said flange, and thus held in place. The said washer extends suificiently far inward for engagement by the threaded lower end of the tube D, which is set within the case into which it is screwed, the tube and base being formed with either out or rolled screw-[h reads, though the latter are preferred as being the cheaper to make. As shown, the tube D is formed with an integral upper end, perforated, as at D, for the reception of the piston-rod K, having a handle K attached to its upper end and a piston K attached to its lower end. If preferred, howover, my improvement may be embodied in a pump, in which, as shown in Fig. 4, the cylinder L is formed at its lower end with an independent cap-like base L and at its upper end with an independent cap L In view of the modifications suggested and of others which may obviously be made I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In afoot-pump, the combination with the cylinder thereof, of a stirrup connected with the lower end of the cylinder, a yielding laterally-extending arm having its inner end rigidly connected with the lower end of the pump, a valve connection mounted directly in the outer end of the said arm and depending below the same, anipple also mounted in the outer end of the said arm and extending above the same, and a tube having its inner end connected with the lower end of the cylinder and its outer end applied to the said nipple.
2. In a foot-pu mp, the combination with the cylinder thereof, of a stirrup connected with the lower end of the cylinder, a laterally-extending yielding arm having its inner end rigidly connected with the lower end of the pump, an upwardly-projecting nipple mounted in the outer end of the said arm, a downwardly-projecting sheet-metal cup mounted upon the outer end of the arm, a rubber washer located within the said cup and com taining a passage forming a continuation of the central opening of the nipple, and a tube connected with the lower end of the cylinder and with the said nipple.
3. In a foot-pump, the combination with the cylinder and stirrup thereof, of a base into which the lower end of the cylinder is set, a yielding arm having its inner end inserted between the stirrup and the base, means for securing the base, arm, and stirrup together, a valve connection carried by the outer end of the yielding arm, and a tube leading from the cylinder to the said valve connection.
