LNITED STATES PATENT.
WILSON R. ELLIS, OF LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA.
CANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,246, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed February 19, 1900. Serial No. 5,683. (No model.)
T0 at whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that 1, WILSON R. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livermore, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tallow or wax candles, the object of my invention being to prevent dripping and waste and to insure more perfect combustion and greater illuminating power.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a vertical section of a candle equipped with my improvement.
Referring to the drawing, (1 represents the body of the candle, and b the wick thereof. The top of the wick is surrounded by a layer 0 of sand, which forms a somewhat porous protective covering for the top of the candle. Any material similar to sand may be used, provided it is heat-conducting, insoluble, and non-inflammable and has sufficient gravity not to float in the melted oil.
The advantages of this construction are uble, and non-inflammable substance, surrounding the wick and resting upon the upper surface of the wax or grease, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILSON R. ELLIS.
