A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED W. TOBEY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO TI-IE GLOBE- WERNICKE COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
DOOR OR DRAWER EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,065, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed September 1, 1899. Renewed September 21, 1900. Serial No. 30,721. (No` model.)
.To afZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, FRED W. TOBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door or Drawer Equalizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved means for equalizing the movements of the door of a case of the kind wherein the door is adapted to swing outward and then slide horizontally into the top of the case to open the latter for placing articles therein or removing them therefrom. This object is accomplished in the manner and by the devices hereinaf ter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a plan view of a single section or case to which my newly-invented doorcloser is attached. Fig. 2 shows a transverse sectional view on line X X, Fig. l. Fig. 3 shows a modified form of my invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the case, constructed in any suitable form.
B represents the parallel oblique pivoted arms, one end of the arms pivoted to the sliding longitudinal rod or strip R and the other ends being pivoted to a longitudinal hingestrip F, having hinges D, by which the door C is hinged to and carried by said strip. This hinge-strip F stands stationary and sustains the door while the latter is swung in the arc of a circle to open or close it; but when the door is slid horizontally into or out of the case the hinge-strip F moves bodily back and forth in a plane parallel with the back wall of the case.
E represents clips which may be used as guides for retaining the sliding strip or rod R in position.
In Fig.2,C shows the door partially opened, and C" shows the door opened and slid back partially in the case. The dotted lines in Fig. 1 show the door partially drawn out of the case and the position ofthe pivoted arms B.
As shown in Figs. l and 2, the strip R slides or moves longitudinally and is preferably in contact with the back side of the case. As
the door is crowded back into the case the parallel oblique pivoted arms cause the rod or strip R to slide, and the arms being inclined hold the door in close contact with one end of the case, being the left hand, as shown in Fig. l. As the door is drawn outwardly the strip or rod R slides in the opposite direction, causing the door to press against the righthand end of the case. The door preferably moves in grooves in the case. Instead of 6o grooves supporting-strips may loe used or any other means to retain the door in proper position.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3,F represents the hinged piece attached to the door and the longitudinally-moving rod is shown by R', which is pivoted to the parallel oblique arms G G. A pair of supplementary parallel oblique arms B B' are pivotally attached to the rod R at one end and pivotally attached 7o to the case at the other end. It will be noted that the rod R in Fig. 3 performs the same function as the rod R in Fig. l, and the operation of the device shown in Figs. l and 3 are substantially alike. 7 5
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a casing, and a door adapted to swing open and slide horizon- 8o tallyY into the top portion of the casing, of a lengthwise-movable rod resting against and slidable upon the inner surface of the back wall of the casing, guide devices on said wall in which said rod moves, two parallel, oblique arms pivoted at their rear extremities to the end portions of said rod, and means for pivotally connecting the front extremities of said parallel, oblique arms with the top edge portion of said door, substantially as and for the 9o purposes described.
2. The combination with a casing, and a door adapted to swing from a vertical to a horizontal position and slide into the casing, of a longitudinal hinge-strip movable back and forth in the case with said door and having hinges connecting the door therewith, a longitudinally-movable rod in the top portion of the case, and parallel, oblique arms pivoted at their front ends to said hinge-strip and at roo their rear ends to said longitudinally-movable i guide devices for retaining said rod upon said rod, substantially as and for the purposes deback wall, and arms pivoted to said hingescrbed. strip and to said rod, substantially as and for 3. The combination with a easing, and a the purposes described. 15 5 door adapted to swing open and slide horizon- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set tally into the top portion of the casing, of a my hand in presence of two subscribing Witlongitudinal hingestrip movable back and nesses.
forth in the top of the easing and to which FRED W. TOBEY. the upper edge of the door is hinged, a longi- Witnesses: xo tudinally-movable rod resting against and EDWARD TAGGART,
slidable upon the back Wall of the easing, DORA B. PARKER.
