UNITED STATES PATENT G EICE.
EUGENE A. HENDERSON, OF RISING CITY, NEBRASKA.
'END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,966, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed June 13, 1900.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, EUGENE A. HENDERSON, residing at Rising City, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in End-Gates and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and novel improvement in end-gates.
The object of my invention is to provide an end-gate which shall be exceedingly cheap of construction and shall be arranged so that the same can be instantly removed from the wagon box, while at the same time offering a means to securely lock the end-gate while the same is secured to the wagon-box.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown a broken view of an end-gate embodying my invention.
My invention embodies an end-gate comprising the members 9 and 10, which are adapted to be secured within the grooves 14 14 of the wagon-box, and these members are secured by means of suitable hinges, as shown at 11 in dotted-lines in the drawing.
Fixed to the member 9, which is shorter than the member 10, is a board or guard 12, which projects a suitable distance beyond the shorter tail-gate section 9 and upon the major portion of the end-gate 10, as is shown in the drawing.
Fixed 'to the major end-gate section 10 is a cleat 4, to which is secured the plate 5 of the keeper 8, secured to a base-plate 7 and held by means of a pin 13 passing into the plate 5, as is shown in the drawing. This keeper is Serial No. 20,156. (No model.)
bent in the shape of a weighted handle, so that the plate 7 is normally held in a horizontal position,so that it laps over and retains the guard 12, forcing the same upon the major portion of the end-gate and locking these two end-gate sections Q and in alinement, as shown, to guard against the wearing away of the end of the guard. The wearing-plate 6 is positioned at the end over and upon which the plate 7 rides.
In securing the end-gate to an ordinary wagon-box it is simply necessary to place the guard 12 below the keeper 8 and place the endgate within the wagon-box. The weighted keeper 8 normally locks the two end-gate portions together. Now when it is necessary or desirable to remove the end-gate the keeper 8 is turned to permit the escape of the guard 12, when the two end-gate portions will hinge outward, permitting their ready removal.
While empty, no shaking of the wagon-box will be able to throw the keeper sufficiently around to permit the guard 12 to escape, so that this device forms a secure lock for the end-gate both when the wagon is loaded or empty.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
In an end-gate of the character described,
the face-plate 5, provided with the pivot 13,
in combination with the latch comprising the V
