Letters Patent No. 66,389, dated July 2, 1867.
IMPROVED ICE-CREAM FREEZER.
digs .tlgetult referrer tu in tigen Mitts ntent mit mating putt rf tige same.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, .IULIO H. of Syracuse, in the county o f Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Ice-Cream Freezer; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same," refer'- ence being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciiication, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of this invention when the same is ready for operation.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section -of the same'.
Figure Sis'a section of the can after the freezing operation has been completed.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an ice-cream freezer in which an internal freezing-surface is created by a cylinder which rises from the bottom of the can,a.nd which is open at the top to receive the pounded ice or freezingmixture, and also open at the bottoni to allow. the water resulting from the melting of the ice to run ofi', said bottom A being elevated 'above the bottom edge of the can to provide for a. lfree'escape 'of the water. The
internal freczingcylinder forms the guide of the beater, which is provided with two vertical slats at diiferent.
distances from the centre of rotation, and with two spring Scrapers, 'one to clean the outer surface of the inner freezing-cylinder, andthe other to clean the inner surface of the can. The pounded, ice is introduced into the inner freezing-cylinder through a funnel which, when reversed, forms the coverfor the can,` so.that when the freezing operation has been completed, the can' can be readily covered up and the ice-cream protected against the induence of the atmosphere, or against impurities or insects.
A. represents acan, which is made of tinned sheet iron, or`of any o ther suitable material, which, however,
must be a good conductor of heat. V This can is cylindrical or conical, and from the centre of its bottom rises: a hollow cylinder, B, which is open at thetop, to receive a quantity of pounded ice `or of `any suitable freezing` mixture, and which is also open at the bottom, so that the water resulting from the melted ice is free to run oil' and the full eiect of the freezing-mixture is obtained. The bottom A of the can is elevated -above the bottom edge thereof, so that the water can run oil' without obstruction, vand by these mehns an internal freezing surface is created which materially facilitates the freezing operation. The can A. isplaced in-a'tub, which is pack-ed with ice or a suitable freezing-mixture in the ordinary manner, and it is provided with a beater, C, composed yof two horizontal arms, @which are provided with eyes to drop Vover the internal freezing-cylinder B, andthe ends of which are connected by vertical slats b situated at different distances from thecentre of rotation of the beater. These slats are provided with spring scrapers c cfone of `which bears against the outer surface of the inner freezingfcylinder, while the other bears against the inner surface of the can, and as 'the beater revolves said spring scrapers .keep the surfaces against which they bear vclean and free from ice, which would otherwise be liable to adhere to them and to reduce the effect of the freezing-mixture or of the ice in the inner freezingcylinder and in the space round the can. The revolving motion of the beater is effected by bevel-wheels g, one of which is attached to the upper arm of the beater, andthe-,other to a horizontal shaft, 7i., whichhas its bearings in a.' standard, z', secured to the supplementary cover D The wheelfis provided with central hole, the diameter of which corresponds to that of the interior diameter of the cylinder B, and from the'supplementary cover rises a bracket, z", which is bored out to receive the spout of the funnel-cover E. Through this funnel the pounded ice or freezing-mixture is introduced into the inner freezing-cylinder, and after the freezing opration has been completed the supplementary cover D, together with the beater, is removed, and the funnelcover is inverted and placed upon the can, the end ofthe spout being stopped up by a. plug or cap, so that said funnel-cover forms a protection for the contents ofthe can.
I am aware that au ice-cream freezer has been made in which a hollow shaft was used to create an additional internal freezing-surface, but this shaft was closed at the bottom, and.y the water resulting from the melted ice soon filled up the hollow shaft, and thereby the fr"ezing eiiect was materially reduced. I do not claim broadly,
therefore, an' ice-cream freezer with an internal freezing-surface,v but what I claim a-s new, and desire to`secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. The combination or the open cylinder` B and raised bottom A of the can A, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The beater C, with double spring Scrapers c c', in combination with the can A and internal cylinder B,- constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The funnel-cover E, in 'combination with the can A and internal cylinder B, constructed and operating JULIO H. RAE.
