SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,309, dated December 4, 1900. Application filed February 7, 1900. Serial No. 4,358. (No model.)
To' all whmn it Duty concern:
Be it known that I, GUTIE HART TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama,have invented new and useful Improvements in Vulcanizers,of which the followingis a full,clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the art of vulcanizing rubber, and has for its object to provide an apparatus which will permit of quickly vulcanizing rubber without any danger of explosion.
The improved apparatus will be fully described hereinafter and its novel features pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a press forming a part of my vulcanizer. Fig. 2 isasectional elevation showing the said press in combination with the receptacle for the goods to be vulcanized and with the vessel adapted to contain the heating agent, and Fig. 3 is adetail perspective view of the bottom plate of the press.
The press, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises a bottom plate A, having a circular band A with a diametrical cross-bar A in line with which are located extensions A having screwthreaded apertures A for the reception of the uprights B, which connect the said bottom A with the top piece 0 of the press. This top piece has a funnel-shaped body O projecting downwardly at its center, and into the bottom of said body fits a screw D, the other end of which fits into a socket E in the presser-plate F. The socket E is shaped as a nut, so that a wrench may be applied to said socket to move the presser-plate F toward or from the bottom A. Into the upper face of the funnel-shaped body 0 screws a rod G, carrying a thermometer H and also provided with a sleeve 1, which in one position, as shown in Fig. 1, covers the thermometer to protect the same, while in the other position it screws on a thread G on the rod Gr, so as to expose the thermometer. The rod G is provided witha handle J at its upper end. The top 0 has an annular groove in its under side, said groove being adapted for engagement by an annular rib K on a vessel K,preferably made of metal. Said vessel also has eyes or catches K adapted to be swungover projections O on the top 0, so that the entire apparatus may be lifted by the handle J.
Between the presser-plate F and the bottom A is adapted to be interposed a perforated metallic box, which consists of a top plate L,
having lugs L, adapted to fit corresponding notches in the upper edge ofthe cylindrical upper section L ,which is perforated, as shown. Below said section is arranged a similar perforated lower section L the two sections being held in alinement by means of lugs L, projecting downwardly from the upper section and engaging the inner Wall of the lower section. This lower section has a perforated bottom L The apparatus is used as follows: The article to be vulcanizedfor instance, a set of rubber teethis embedded in plaster-ofparis in the perforated metal box L L This box is then placed on the bottom A and the presser-plate F is screwed down sufficiently to hold the box in position. The press, with the box, is then placed in hot water, and as the rubber softens the pressure is increased until all excess of rubber is expelled and the upper-and lower sections of the perforated box are in contact with each other. Meanwhile the vessel K has been-heated by placing it on astove,said vesselcontainingasuitable quantity of metal M, fusing at a low temperature or containing mercury. The quantity of this metal should be sufficient to entirely cover the perforated box when it is inserted into the vessel K. The press having been inserted into the vessel K and fastened thereto, if de- 0 sired, by the catches K the heating is continued for about thirty min utes at a temperature of approximately 320, as indicated by the thermometer H. The combined top O and screw-press containing the perforated box is 5 then removed and the goods taken from the box in perfect condition. The readily-fusible metal or mercury, whichever medium is used, becomes cool in the vessel K and is ready for use at any other time. There is no danger of explosion, and the time required for the operation is about one-third of that nec- IOO essary in the present system of vulcanizing by steam.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the receptacle, the press-top, means for detachably connecting the receptacle with the underside of the presstop, the handle extending upwardly from the press-top and beyond the top of the receptacle so that said handle forms a means of carrying the press alone, or the press with the receptacle, a bottom permanently connected with the presstop and fitting into the receptacle,the presser-plate adjnstably connected with said top, and the perforated box adapted to be held between the presser-plate and the bottom.
2. The combination of the press comprising a top with a depressed central portion, a handle secured to the top centrally, a thermometer on the handle in the depressed portion GUTIE HART TUTTLE.
