' WITNESSES? I IN VENTOIIY. &-f%/% ATTORNEYJ Ni'rnio ra'ras MARIA ENGLEHART HOLDEN, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
IRONING=BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,274, dated December 4, 1900.
Application filed June 22,1899. Serial No. 721,425. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARIA ENGLEHART HOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Yonkers,county of WVestchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing- Boards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing-boards, the object thereof being to provide a device of this character adapted for use in pressing seams, whereby the iron only contacts with the surface of the seam during the process of pressing without the necessity of ironing any other portion of the garment.
The device is simple in construction, durable and inexpensive, and it is especially applicable for use in pressing the seams of sleeves or other similar portions of agarment.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings,forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved ironing-board; and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation thereof, taken on the line a: a: of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention the ironingboard proper comprises a curved arm A, having the convex upper surface a. This said arm is extended from and formed integrally with a base A, which is secured to a bedplate B by means of dowels a and a screw a The dowels a are extended from the under surface of the base A and fit into apertures in the upper surface of the bed-plate B, and the head of the screw or bolt of, which fastens the ironing-board to the bed-plate, is countersunk within a recess in the lower surface of the bed-plate B, whereby the ironing-board is detachably connected to the bed-plate, but cannot accidentally turn thereon by a slight loosening of the screw.
To support the outer end of the arm A, the upright O is provided, which is connected to the bed-plate B by the rule-joint 0, so that it may be folded down upon the bed-plate, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, or raised up, as illustrated in full lines in said Fig. 1
of the drawings. WVhen this upright is in vertical position, it rests with its upper end against the shoulder a formed in the lower surface of the arm A, and with the shoulder of the rule-joint at the lower end thereof resting on the upper surface of the bed-plate B. Thus constructed and arranged facility is afforded for folding down said upright on said base-plate whenever it is required to adjust a garment on said arm for pressing. This is particularly applicable to sleeves, pants-legs, and the like. When the garment has been properly adjusted, the upright may be raised into vertical position. It will then be found that the rule-joint gives it great steadiness and solidity.
In the operation and use of the device the garment is adjusted on the arm A and the seam thereof adapted to be pressed is placed approximately upon the center of the convex upper surface of the arm A, whereby the flat surface of the iron will contact only with the seamed portion and leave no marks on the face of the goods being pressed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an ironing-board, the combination with a base-plate B, a curved arm A, formed with a base A, and fastened to said base-plate with a countersunk bolt and dowels as specilied, of an upright support, a rule-joint attaching said support to said base-plate, a shoulder formed on the under side of the said arm at or near its outer end, and adapted to engage the upper end of said support, all so arranged that facility is afforded for folding said upright support against said base-plate in a horizontal position, and for raising the same into an upright position,when the upper end thereof will rest on the shoulder (1 and the shoulder of the rule-joint 0, will rest on the surface of the base-plate B, to afford steadiness and solidity to said arm; all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 20th day of J une, 1899.
MARIA EN GLEHART HOLDEN.
