IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
my: fitlgchult nfsmh it in time Wists agent amt mating part at flge same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, A. W. GORE, of Manhattan, inthecounty of Riley, and State of Kansas, have invented a new and improved Post; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. I
The present invention relates to a post for fences and other purposes, such as for hitching horses, &c., which post is made of sheetiiron of any suitable kind, or any other suitable metal that will not and can be protected from rust, and provided with cross-wires, havingan eye or'eyes, or loops at either one or both ends for securing the ends of the sections of a wire or other fence thereto, or for convenience in hitching a horse or other animal, if used as a hitching-post.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved post is illustrated, the figure being a central vertical section thro'uglr'the same. r
A, in the drawings, represents a post made according to the present invention. This post A is made hollow and of sheet ,metal, such as sheet iron, whether Russia or any other suitable kind, protected by galvanizing or by coating it with coal tar, or any other material suitable for protecting sheet metal from rust. 'At the upper end B the post A is capped with a plate, C, and at its lower endsecured or fastened to a wooden base orblock, D, of such a kind, as walnut or cedar, that will not decay when under and in the ground. In the sides to the body of the post, holes a are made protectedwith eyelets 6. These holes a are at several points of the post from its lower to its upper end, at equal distances apart upon opposite sides of and directly across the post. Through the holes a in the post from one side to-the other wires E-are extended, which at each end have an eye or loop F. These loops or eyes F may be used for hitching a horse or other animal to them, or for hanging or securing thesections of aiwire-rail or other fence, it in the one case to be used as a hitching or in the other, as a fence-post. 1
Among the many advantages of my improved-post above described may be mentioned that, first, it is cheap, durable, eflicient, and most convenient for being put up or taken down; second it is indestructible by fire, and in weight much less than wood posts, while at the same time it is as strong it not stronger, and as stiif and rigid as wooden posts.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A post for fences, &c made of sheetmetal, and provided with cross-wires or rods, substantially as and for the purpose described.
A. W. GORE.
